Deep Six Alloys--real or repro?
«

Need some help guys.
I have a chance to pick up a set of deep six alloys (yeah, Fuchs
). Anyway, I'm buying them sight unseen.. no pic's, only a verbal description from the seller.
Here's my question: Does anybody know how long these wheels have been reproduced? Is Flat 4 the only re-pops of this wheel?
From the sellers description, they are definitely 6", have the deep outer lip, have hearts, and do not have the inner tire safety bead (smooth inner rim). They have been fully polished at some point and the seller has had them in his possession for about ten years. He claims they do not have any markings on the inside of the spokes but I have not yet confirmed.
If they're real, it's a smoking deal and I really want them.. If they're copies, not so much..
Thanks!

Sounds like a cool deal, Dave!
So, those early wheels don't have part numbers on the backsides?
... I wouldn't know ... only have lates.
Hope everything works out for you.

Ask if they have a 901xxxx part number on the inside of the spoke and do they have center caps? If they have 3 prong center caps, a fox head on the inside of the spoke and a 901 part number, they should be the real deal.

The above is true if they were production wheels from 69-71. However, the deep 6 could be purchased in 1967 and 68 as a racing part and only had an ink stamp for the casting #'s. These wheels did not have any permanent #s other than the date stamp which was located near the hub (on the backside) between the lugs. While not common, these do turn up. In fact I bought one last month.
I wouldnt purchase without a photo.

it may be possible they are 7R wheels I believe that these did not have a part number cast into them as the part number was applied with a rubber stamp in ink
these look the same as early 6" but with more back space
that would be a cool deal

Hi Tom,
As far as I know,
all
real Alloys have markings, numbers, dates, etc. Problem is, I can not view them in person just yet and the seller is not able to send photos. He said the back side of the wheels are dirty too.. maybe hiding the markings? The seller is not willing to spend much time helping me either. The guy is older and not in to VW's.
Thanks Luke,
They do have three prong caps.. What about repros? Do they?
Cornpanzer,
Ink stamp? Thats a new one on me!
That's why I ask!!
Thanks guys..

Good one Ron!
Seller measured the wheels and said they're 6" though..
Thanks!

don't know how long they have been reproduced but I have had a set of 6 that were not original nor flat4, much older. Great repros, the only detail was that the outer lip had a 45° angle, not a smooth radius like original ones..

If nothing else, Have the guy weigh them! . I would say if they are a cast wheel they would be kinda heavy. Original forged wheels are pretty light!!

Dave, if those are Flat Four wheels and early six (not late), I'll buy 'em.
Call me and let me know. Good luck and I hope that they're real so your Oval can enjoy the alloy goodness.

i had some fake alloys 30 years ago......they were good looking but did not polish
up real well. Caveat emptor my friend / buyer beware. I don't remember much
more about them, sorry. Good luck, try to verify before spending the dough!!

Don't the spokes taper more (making them thinner) on fake repro rims where the spokes intersect the center cap hole? Maybe he could give you a measurement there (at the narrowest point) so you could compare with someone else on here?
Just a thought...He obviously can use a tape measure as you've already found out and it wouldn't be out of his way or time consuming for him. I hate lazy sellers (yes, even when you're scoring big time!). Good luck.

I thought they looked real too!
The only thing that threw me was the lack of part numbers, dates, etc on the backside. The deal is a bit more complicated now, not just a simple cash transaction, we now have a trade+cash+parts deal.
I'm working hard to pull it together!
Thanks!
