Dragster built by Jack McAfee – note the four-cam Porsche motor and those skinny front wheels/tyres – and Michelin rear tyres! Looks like in the second photo he'd had second thoughts about using that four-cam motor, though! To quote: "This is for all my Porsche 356 buddies. Jack McAfee, the Hollywood Imports and Burbank Imports Porsche Dealer was not only a veteran lakes and road racer, he also challenged the Model A and Model B motors that dominated NHRA's X/Dragster class with this 600 pound 4 cam strip car that he built. The new car was running competitive mid-11s at 107 mph in the quarter. Notice it has no starter motor, is topped with Solex carbs and is seen wearing skinny Michelin tires."

Sorry to disappoint. This is very old news/old pictures to the 356 crowd who followed Jack McAfee. Thats him when his hair was dark black. the dealership was a great place to visit.

Is that a 4cam engine or a regular 356 engine?
4cam did not come with a upright fan shroud did it?

Sorry to disappoint... with your comment. We know you're right, as always. But the value of this forum is to help disseminate items of interest. Not everyone here is blessed with your infinite knowledge on every subject. Even those of us who do have a knowledge of McAfee still enjoy passing on interesting photos, whether or not it's 'old news' to you... And I guess that you must disagree with my subject title – to you this is not cool. Shame, because most of us think it is, whether it's 'very old news/old pictures' or not.

Is there suppose to be several pics? I can only see one, and it looks like a "36hp shroud" not a 4-cam shroud.
it also looks like the engine has "one valve cover" not 2 one each side like the 4-cam
or am I totally wrong?

Hey Keith, I like how he doesn't add anything to the history on this one. Obviously its "old news" the pictures are black and white. How about some more info on them OC? Oh yeah I think they're COOL!

Old news is good news.
Keith, I saw a pic of this rail, with the 4-cam engine, in a recent issue of Hot Rod Deluxe. It was a small photo that looks similar to the first one you posted.
Out with the new, in with the old!

Did someone say FREE DONUTS??? Dragster is pretty cool ... funny how thew early ones were quite similar in design. This one reminded me of Bergs early digger and the EMPI dragster ... How COOL would that have been? Think about it ... a spare 4-can Carrera engine laying around ... HEY! Let's put it in a dragster and see what it'll do! Thanks for posting, Keith! VERY COOL!

I too, have a new toy called the internet, and have made an ass of myself from time to time I'm sure but that's another story. I still love seeing old pics I haven't seen before or seen in a long time. I thought I was going to see pics of Jim Sibley's 911 powered dragster , anyone have any? Anyway, I enjoy seeing these pics and reading the story and the history behind them. I know setting the cam timing on these 4 cam motors is a real nightmare... Thanks for sharing Keith. Parties can be fun with a bit of kaos
