Back in the cave. Getting down to business!  Grin Blew the beam apart last weekend, my dad stripped and painted all the components I was going to powdercoat. I want to have his input just like the first time we built this car. And it stops him watching daytime tv. I had him use the often mocked in serious automotive circles: HAMMERITE SMOOTH SPRAY CANS. So stick that in yer' pipe and smoke it. I love the finish myself, it's tough as old boots, and with good prep looks fantastic.





Got a nice new exhaust to replace my sidewinder. Going to be running a baffled stinger to begin with, and buy a mondo when I can.





Back on it again tomorrow, still got the brake backing plates / steering box / wiper linkage to paint up, then can get it all back together with the new brake hardware and on it's wheels again. I've also been polishing / detailing up the speedo ring and wiper motor. Typing is difficult at this time, feel like I have crab claws for hands, various grades of sandpaper and wheel polish can be so very cruel.

So nice working with clean stuff. I'm enjoying every second of it.  Smiley

Yep, used it as per the can, warm can, 3 coats at 15 minute intervals. Takes a while to dry off I find and remains tacky for a good day or so! After that though it's tough stuff, I've not had any problems with it coming off. And I walloped the trailing arms in with a mallet which the paint took in its stride. Will see how it does in the long term but I sprayed my brake drums with it a few years ago and they still look great.

Fun fun fun fun! Front brakes all done, beam on, body mounts on, front lines plumbed, all shocks and steering set up. Ride height set. Also did the front wing beading using a 20mm leather punch I got to bang out the centres. Then popped the headlights in! All in all, a great two days work, with only one disaster which was stripping the threads on the front drivers side napoleon hat threaded plate. Totally unsure about how to rectify it....  Sad Other than that, good times!

Hey Jamie, I wear my cal look drag day shirt when I work on the car now!  Grin Sad to hear about this years being knocked on the head but onwards to the next one! Might give me time to work over the engine and tweak the car, break in to the 14s!

Small update this weekend, went out friday for a friends birthday and got mullered, so Saturday was spent in my pants hanging like a fruit bat.

Sunday was the day of activity. Managed to get all the brake lines done, all the way to the rear drums, flexis and clips are all in. I didn't do anything, my brother did it all! The wiring loom fuse box is in place, gearshifter and had some test fitting of the pedal assembly and column. This weekend should see some major progress and get the car ready for wiring up!

Ignore the white powder, the fireproof plaster in my garage decided it wasn't going to stay in place and had a small incident there! I wasn't on any Peruvian marching powders, although that would have been nice as a pick me up. Hah! It's times looking at the pictures I wonder why I went with gloss black. LOOK at all those greasy fingerprints!!  Cry

Another update. Been mostly doing all the rear brakes this weekend. Handbrake cables are in, all new rear brake components and re-set the ride height. I HATE messing with rear torsion bars, honestly, it's the worst job. Alright for the lowered guys putting on slack arse settings on the deck but for anyone who wants some real street presence and the RAKE it's a pig, with fresh knobbly rubbers inner and outer getting the torsion bar cover on was awful. All done though now.

We all love the 36mm socket don't we? Seriously though, No weight in the car and undoing those nuts.... Had me and my brother sat on the tyre with a 48" breaker bar, good times.



So with all that done at the rear I then turned myself to the pedals.... Now, fitting these pedals took me the best part of a day and a half, I am never ever ever doing it again. It fought me every step. I almost resorted to fitting a zip tie to the clutch cable arm as I was getting in a tizzy. My work lamp may or may not have suffered my wrath.

All in now anyway. Just got to run the accelerator cable and I'm good for all controls. Just gotta add fluid.



Gratuitous shot of the loom from Rebel looms, specific vw, all labelled every 12" along the wire. Going to be a dream. Has instructions for using all the stock vw switch gear early and late so roll on goodtimes. I riv-nutted the fuse box in place with aluminium riv-nuts. Obv aluminium, for the weight saving.  Cheesy



Next weekend should see the big step of putting in the steering column, and the ENGINE. After that I'll be turning my attention to the doors and windows / interior and wiring it all up. Then I'll be driving the wheels off it.  Grin

Hey Danny, still not as rad as Lizzy. I poured over pictures of the wings and bits on your car. Was a major influence. I keep kinda thinking I should have gone with uprights to keep it the right period for the car but whatever, I just love the look of slopers. With the 67 doors on it'll be an even bigger wrong'un Cheesy


The engine is in. Mocked up the exhaust lightly and got to figure out the oil filter position, probably up in the wing there or off an exhaust hanger. Those green decklid hinges are making me twitch at the moment, need a new set if anyone has any lying around. While drilling out the pins for the quick release clips the bit caught and tore a piece off. So need them.  Huh The engine needs some bits removed to bring it back a few decades looks wise, the dynamo backing plate in particular. Which I didn't buy, it was on the fanshroud already. Honest guv'...

My bro and me, in the MOT test bay...  Cheesy


Had the Morris out to get the bug motor out the back of the Bat Cave where it has languished for the last however many months



Mothers day tomorrow so no more garage time this weekend. If you're fortunate enough to still have ya mum, treat them! Without them, you would be dust in the wind.  Smiley

It's my brothers now! He paid off the money I lent him for it. He was out on the weekend ripping up the town, then we pulled the differential as it was howling, it's a detroit locker so that's going to Hauser this week for repair / backlash setting. Won't be long until the cruising weather is here and for a spot of nightcrawlin'. I love the sound of a flat 4 thumping away out back, but a V8 up front is great too. I think this year we will have a showdown at Santa Pod!  Grin

It never ends, the multi coloured spaghetti never ends! Lots of wiring and heatshrinking. Pretty stoked, got it cranking over today. One step at a time. My uncle buzzed over earlier in his Healey, great car!









Back is broken from automotive yoga. Adjusted all the brakes up and greased the front beam, loads of small jobs that all add up. Spent an hour fixing the grease gun. Nightmare. Anyway, all on track for driving this sucker come summer. Fingers crossed.

 Grin Haha. Well, I'm hoping most my door gubbins goes back on them. Got the correct winders and handles. Hopefully the rest should be a shoe in. Worried about the latches but from what I've seen they will just require a small mod and be working. Eek. I won't know until the end of the build, it will be the last piece of the puzzle. Don't want to ruin my easy access.  Wink

Glass in, doors on, seats in. Doors need a final bit of adjustment on the hinges / catch. We spent about 10 minutes a side lining them up. But I'm pleased with how they are at the moment. Next up is brakes getting bled out and finish the wiring, just got to hook up the switches and I'm golden.  Grin

That's about that. In retrospect I would have gone big on the heads with a dafter cam and some IDAs but will get around to boosting the output eventually. One step at a time.  Wink

This weekends progress... Well. Got the brakes bled out and adjusted, used a vacuum pumper which made very light work of the job. Also did a bit more wiring, and test fitted a rear wing plus decklid. Lots of small hold up. Wing is hitting on oil filter fittings so few bits o'fanangling.

I hate snap in scrapers! Still playing with the curved ends but it's all done and I actually drove it yesterday! Only final touches to do now, sort the interior, do the tracking properly, felt a bit "wandery".

Gave the car it's first wash since it's been back together, was ultra grimey but was too afraid to wash the fresh paint. It's come up spectacular. Took it for a blast around. Have put in some Simpson belts, planning on putting the rear seat back in to cut some noise out too.

Autumn time is the perfect driving weather, engine is happy sucking in the cooler air, and I don't burn in a black car like summer. Haha.

My dad always wanted to make some cover plates up out of some tube to give it a profile. Got me thinking now. I'd have to engine turn the inside of the headlights, and a zillion other bits to keep the theme, a la moonbug:

Oh the heat in the summer was horrendous, I was parking it under any shade I could find, which meant bird cack and tree spunk. NOTHING beats shiney black paint though imo. I love it.  Cheesy
