OK i think the tread about the chop top has made a lot of people think and talk about evolution. so here is the topic to spawn those ideas and have some insights on the subject. it is not limited to that one car or to gassers of the seventies. it is about cars that are around now as well. is Fabs 61 still the same car if it will run a 2.2 l engine? did Andy jewell build a totally different car then the previous incarnation, or is changing an 80's car's ignition to a MSD setup a crime?Huh all questions, all opinions are appreciated.

have fun

Interesting topic...

I feel its very normal for a race car to evolve, in the pursuit of better ET's..
A cal-looker should loose more and more chrome over the years.. hehe... Personally I like to change a few things now and again, just to make it interesting for ME...
I know my cars never get(s) done...  Grin

So if you find inch pincher,Do you put it back to PRE roof chop as thats how it was first raced? Or is that ok still as a chop? is it ok to put a modern version of an original engine in an old car? or does it have to be exact,is it ok to claim you restored a car when you modified it? surely its one or the other? and as this topic has arisen due to the chop for sale,if you restored it,then to what period? the one YOU liked best? or the first incarnation? to me its all bo***cks,as the owner of the car you decide what YOU want to do to it,I dont see anyone giving John F grief for not using the original pan under it Shocked

The double standards or some people really pisses me off Angry

now these days a new car with under 100bhp is hard to find, so evolving is what needs to be done, if the owners wants to, we live in a free world  Grin

yeah Richie, i think so as well, BUT i don't think everybody thinks like that. that is why there was the 'commotion' about the choptop. i would really like to have one myself, but indeed i would restore it like it looked with the DDS rims and small sunroof. but i probally would have to cut corners as i can't afford real DDS rims or 88 empi pistons,... so it that is why i made the post as well. lets just think about this a little harder and maybe come to appreciate (respect??) what people do.  Wink

Regarding Cal Look Volkswagens; there are no crimes. There are no rules. Do what makes YOU happy. Under any circumstances, do not attempt to please anyone or any group/grope/gruppe.

Why? Simple Frank's post, below, outlines and answers any/all queries pertaining to all of this.

I personally think that it is up to the Owner to do what ever he wants to do, whatever Car he owns or it is... Wink

I crack up at people when they tell me how to decorate or build my Beetle. I smile and tell them to build their own and let me know how it works out. That would be the same equivalent as me telling my friends to surf, skateboard, fish a certain way. HAHA!! We're all different (thank God) and we all yield a different signature on this ball that we call Earth. I, for one, aim to keep tending to that glowing light at the end of the tunnel, such that it is.

nah i meant what i said, i just can not master the English tongue well enough to say what i ment. i ment it in a nice way and in an attempt to have an idea about what people think, NOT that you have to build the car THEY want.

HAHA!! That's good stuff... I must share that with my best friend. He restores '60-'67 Beetles, but his favorites are '61-'64 Type 3 Notchbacks. His muscles are bigger than mine, so I'm sure he'll be amused.

I'm always suggesting that he try lowering one of his cars and adding some Fuchs 911 or 914 wheels. Maybe one of these days.

Say if someone owned a piece of history, a car made by someone else that everyone just loved and the new owner didn't give it the respect it deserved... or any respect at all. Would you speak up then? I'm not talking about making it in to a roadster or anything... just neglect..

Yep! That's been my rule since I was old enough to drive. I fully dig on black cars but doubt that I'll ever own one. They're like my nephews, nieces, and (hopefully, one day) grandchildren... love 'em a lot, but at the end of the day, they go back to their owners. 'Tis why I've always charged extra to detail black cars, as well.

I'd get pretty bored of my own car if I never changed it, similar to the thread reently asking if a car is ever finished...

My vote goes for change - lets face it, most of the old cars now are SO changed anyway that even if a car is restored back to how it was it would never really be THE ORIGINAL  car unless it was totally UNTUOCHED from the day it stopped racing. It just a recreation using some of the origina; parts - which don't get me wrong, is really, really cool.

My vote is for evolution!

And finally - I second the other comments, a persons car is their own to do with as they see fit.

I’m also pro evolution. Even family cars are getting faster and faster these days so we need to upgrade as well imho.  The purpose of the look is to smoke the guy next to you.  What you gonna say if this dude in the family station car packed with 5 kids in the back blows you away?  Yeah, but I have a real 70-ies iginition system, lalaalalalala   So what?    Why is everybody trowing there msd parts in the garbage?  Okay, it looks 90’s….  So what, it does the job and it is superb stuff…
I don’t have a problem with the older stuff, I’m a fan too but give the newer parts that don’t look correct also a shot…  What’s wrong with autometer gauges or msd parts or ….?
Okay, I will stop wining about it…  Grin

If Darryll Vittone still owned and raced the Inch Pinchers, They would be upgraded and upgraded and so on and so on and so on all the way up to present day. Same car and owner, just updated. I've been upgrading my car on a continual basis for 29 years now.

I've been upgrading my car on a continual basis for 29 years now.

And it's still YOUR car!

My '67 is a lot different to it was when I first did it in '92, the trans was a hammered stock 1300 which popped out of 2nd - now it's got a built close ratio tranny. The motor is the same size - but nothing is the same! It had a welded counterweighted 78 now it's got a Berg forged 78. It had 311B rods - now it's got Carillos. It's had three different sets of cylinder heads and three different pairs of IDAs - currently NOS Italians. The brakes were drums up front now they are CSP discs. It had an EMPI GT wood rim - but that was like the wheel you'd steer an ocean liner with - now it's got an original NOS Brittania wheel. The decklid was stock - now it's got a '67 Cabrio lid. The front wings were Euro spec '67 sloping headlight -now it's got upright US spec wings. The front end has been changed three times, and is now narrowed to allow for dropped spindles, CSP discs. Even the BRMs have been changed - only one or two of them were on the car in 1991. It had long axles and 165 Michellins - now it's on Sway-A-Way short axles and 205 65 15 Dunlops. Initially, it didn't have a roll cage either. Oh, and it had an EMPI E-Z-R now it's got a Berg locker. that's just what I can recall.
It's still my car - it will always be my car.  I see it as logical progression, and I only change things for the better in my opinion. If someone else doesn't like any change to my car - that's up to them, I've got more important things to worry about than whether someone somewhere that I've never met has a negative opinion about the fact my wiper arms are silver.
