Danny, a friend of mine up north, Ray Schubert used to sell the GWD kits, in grp and carbon fiber. I saw a few of the kits installed and they were killer. They all used the later Carrera 964 or 993 (?) "twist" style fan.... supposed to be most efficient and quiet. I have seen a lot of VW stuff running the typical 245mm eleven blade, and from what I have heard, they are the "whiney" ones.... the seven blade 2.7 fan is the one to stay away from... I think Porsche went to those in the smog 70's to make motor run hotter for smog (same motors that had thermal units on exhaust). Here is a killer car from 1980's in SF Bay Area that ran one of the first kits I ever saw (1987)....  http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,2588.0.html

Jim,
The 12-blade or what you call the twist style fan is actually only used because porsche doesn't make the 11-blade anymore...
The 12-blade produces LESS cu.ft/min then an 11-blade older fan.
However, the 12 blade fan is larger in stock form (255mm) than the old 11-blade was (245mm) and what the shrouds were/are designed for, so they machine them smaller in diameter. That means that the already less air producing 12-blade now produces even less...

So, get the 11-blade fan if you can  Wink

BTW, I thought porsche fans were 'not done' with cal-look style cars?

So what's the going rate for a 11 blade fan setup new, used, what I'm trying to make is something that looks like,a fan setup on 356 porsche. I think they were 4 plug motors with the cast alum  air intake for fan. do not quote me I dont know alot about 356 stuff. If you know what I'm thinking of please educate me please. and I'm going to shape all the shroud and cylinder tin maybe alum and grain sand and clear coat. or steel and just paint semi gloss black. have not got there yet!!. but again thanks for any input

I think you mean the 4-cam 356 motors that had the dual entry fan with generator concentric in the fan.
There are some pics somewhere on here of that fan/motor. If you need some diagrams and ghost views of the shroud/fan on the 356, let me know if you get faxes

On the black turbo car I found a brand new 11 blade fan made of aluminum, sold by Vertexauto.com. Yes, a bit heavier but can be painted/polished/chromed etc. I have seen many 911 shroud setups in VWs that eat alternator bearings. I was told the 35 year old mag fans might contribute to this problem.

the fanring is turned down, not the fan, so the diameter of the fan stays the same
