type3 carbs: engine not responding that good.

i am not sure if this is callook or not, maybe it belongs in this section.

so i have build a 1641cc engine and it is allmost stock type3 except for a few things i changed:

- 69 x 87 stock crank, stock flywheel, stock type3 cooling setup
- cam is a reground original, and it said on the ticket w110/vz15 so i guess it is in between those two if possible, i suspect it to have the lobe has been kept original and the back been reground closer to the center.
- 1.1 rockers on solid/screwtype shafts
-019 distributor
stock dual carbs setup off a type3
-glasspack exhaust with heathers.

the problem is it runs lean (to me) as it pops through the exhaust and gets warm. no temperatre gauge, but it gets hot. runs like a dream, but starts to stall and bog after longer trips.
the problem is that i want to open the mixture srews more, but then the engine drops in speed, loads up at idle.

so can i fix this? is it the distributor, carbs, or anything else i am overlooking.

checked those several times. ditched the metal gaskets (what was i thinking???) and got some thick paper ones like under IDA's and IDF's.

just to make sure. could airleaks let the engine speed go down after some point by just adjusting the mixture screws?

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be an air leak, couldn't get the mixture right, also check the exhaust for leaks.  then work your way through the ignition timing, plug gaps, rockers.

thanks. i will let you know. i am going to take the car for a spin today and see if the problem is solved.

i found that the distributor body sent sparks to the case when i set the timing  i have no idea how that is possible, but it did. so i will try to set up another distributor and go from there, then the carbs again if the problem still persists.
it is always these things that create the holdup and hassle. i should really just cut through the chase and buy new parts and not try to salvage a set off carbs that have been sitting in a shop or on an engine for 30 years.
