Other Project Cars that were Fun!

Over the years I have dabbled in all aspects of the VW hobby and fabricating is one of my passions.  While I have stayed pretty much a Cal Look purest and that is my #1 love, I have also built cars for friends, helped fabricate suspensions, done metal work and other things.  This was a project car where I built the chassis to take a Moshier Speedster body when finished. 

I build the chassis and finished it up (as a functional race chassis/including first outings and test runs) for a local VW shop owner in Phoenix. It had a 2074 such through turbo motor, coil over rear suspension (which I set up and build all the arms etc.) and type one VW gearbox.  It was not very heavy and the first time out on the first shakedown run at FIREBIRD Raceway it ran a 10.50 without much effort.  This was without the body.  The original 8.00 wide slick were plenty for the car to launch and I never could figure out why the owner put 10" wide tires on it. 

This was a fun project car that ran straight and true from the first day we took it out. I did not get to see the finished product but would love to get my hands back on it today. It was truly a fun bracket car combo.  Could run 10/90's all day long without trying.

Hey Rick, Thats awesome.

Every time I see a tube frame car two things happen - first I want one, then I wonder how you arrive at the tubing design - is it following accepted designs or do you design it from scratch?

Looks awesome! Anyone have any pics of it with a body on there? What did it eventually run Rick, any idea?

The car ran 10.50 at over 130mph. The owner never did get around to mounting the body. For all I know, it is resting in the back corner of a shop somewhere.

The chassis was of my design. We wanted it simple but functional. I used NHRA guidelines for the 6 point cage and driver support. The rear was a ladder bar type set up with coil overs. I added little things like a weight tube at the front that you could fill with lead shot to determine how much weight to put over the nose. It helped with how much weight leveraged onto the rear wheels when the car launched.  It was a very drivable car.

It was owned by Mont Cozier in Phoenix who ran a shop called MONTZ VWs.  I am not sure if he is still around.

    Now that I have my 32 Hot Rod about finish time to start thinking my newest project the 58 NSU VW powered. I was thinking to build a chassis for it that you can slide the body on top and bolting it down as you would a VW body. IRS will be the suspension to go with. Here are pictures of the car at various stages.

That NSU looks like the perfect candidate for a VW in the back. What have you planned for your rear suspension and subframe?

     I have the back section of a 1971 beetle I will have to shorten the rear torsion area and trailling arms and shorten the cv joints a few inches. Rack and pinion in front. The chassis will be the main challenge,after
     that no problem. Maybe someone in Calif can give me an idea for the chassis and maybe delivering it to whoever is interested to do it.
