Help!! Not really a problem but I would appreciate some professional input on this..

I'm going all-out with my '66 using an IDA48/2276cc powerplant. I hope to accomplish this build during the winter.

However!! I found a fantastic carb on a swapmeet, Solex 40 DHH (equivalent to Weber DCOE??) and I already had some nostalgic bolt-on velocity-stack's for it in my "stash".. It would be an awesome looking engine, the carb on it's side above the dizzy (making my own intake-manifold..), tiny vintage power-pulley, 36HP-shroud etc. etc. Buying a 76CW crank is the same cost as a 69mm and using the original 1300cc 1966 engine as a base, upgrading with the crank and using 85.5 c/p gets me somewhat higher compression. Modifying the original 180mm clutch and 8-dowelled super-light flywheel I figured it could make for a fun little thing. And still using the 6V electrics.. (car is still bone-stock apart from wheels and T-bars..)



I know it's not by any means the best engine-combo available, it's just something I thought I'd do for fun.. the engine-bay would look magic (and one-of-a-kind!).

Question; What kind of engine-characteristics would this get me? I mean with the relatively long stroke compared to bore? I don't know about the rods, how will those make a difference? And with the single-mounted carb, what might this make HP-wise, if compression is 8.5:1 and perhaps an engle W110 with 1:25 rockers? Still original single-port heads though!

Is this just to crazy and not even drivable, or would it actually work out okay and get me in the 65-70HP range?

Would a compression of 11-12:1 be an option with the E85 fuel?

I'd be happy for any comments or ideas..  Smiley

IMHO Donīt bother Itīll take you a lifetime to make it run right, if ever. You wanna build a tourqey litle bi***  out of your single port engine. Fine.
Buy the 76 mm crank. Clear the case, so you can use stock rods ( 1,80 RR) If you want an Engle cam take the W100. You do not want much overlap with sgl port heads.
Port the intake about the best you can, short guides, 3 angle valve job, cut back valves, HD springs set CR to 8,9 -1 using V power. (8,5-1 with 95 octane) Buy an Empi/CB centersection with larger endpieces and use a 34 mm Pict 3 carburettor. (Make sure uou get the correct distributor along with it.) And a regular 1 3/8" 4-1 header.
That will give you approx. 70 usable hp. with good torque.

use a 34 mm Pict 3 carburettor. (Make sure uou get the correct distributor along with it.)

By "correct distributor" do you mean the factory one that was used with the 34PICT? I tried an 010 with the 34 once... bad news!!

I meant the one that comes with 34 m Pictīs, - or a newer SVDA. for that matter. Both works good.
Generally I do not care much for non vacum distributors with stock single carbs.

OK so I started mocking up the new intake. Using pieces of an old exhaust-system (not VW by the way..) That's about it for now.. figured going for looks alone, skipping the 1745cc concept, it will be a regular 1600cc.

I only hope I can get the carburettor set up and running OK. Does anyone here have a flange for the carb? It's the same as an IDF, something I could weld on to my pipes? Would save me some time.. maybe an old busted single-IDF set-up, cut out the flange and ship it my way for some $$?
