i am having a bit of a pondering afternoon  Grin

when does it pay off to use a breather box?
does it pay off with your dual carb 1600? or only with bigger than stock sized engines?
or is there no real need for it?

sometimes i see small engines that have them and large ones that don't...

If you want to keep the aircleaners dry it is better to use a breatherbox. I made special small boxes for use with the original fan shroud . And they look nice .

I once put a breather box on a high reving 1600 (041 heads, 36 Dells, ratio rockers, cw crank) and noticed more seat of the pants power and extended revs. I feel it evacuated the crankcase pressure allowing less windage of the crankshaft, but I could be totally wrong on my hypothosis.

That is the theory. Also, if you have oil coming out of the crankshaft pulley, a breather box can alleviate that problem.

does anyone have good experience with a CB breather tower?
i've read they sometimes leak, but i like the looks of it  Embarrassed

My last motor was an 1835 with an Engle 110 built with used up parts that my brother and I put together when we were 14 & 16 years old (respectively).  It drove just fine all over the place and would cruise 80mph on the freeway all day long, but once you upped it to 85 you would have a column of white smoke following you down the road.  Next time we had the motor out we popped a cheap buckpack breather box on the motor, hooked to each valve cover and the oil filler vent- bingo, no more smoking (take note Carney).

Point is, this was a terrifically obvious demonstration to me how larger displacement/higher rpm created extra crankcase pressure.  This exess pressure would push oil out of the motor where it would be burped up on the exhaust and stink up the place.  Adding a breather box gives all this air being pushed around a place to go without letting it take the oil with it on it's way out.

For what it's worth, I prefer the cheap bugpack breather boxes even for high performance motors because you can attatch it to the back of the shroud, and run the lines through the rear tin to the valve covers for a nice clean look- I usually open up the hole in the fittings a bit to help it breathe a little easier.  Have fun!

yes i would agree.
In my last car a ran a 1776 without a breather box. You could drive all day sensibley (no fun), and there would be no oil coming from the front pulley, but as soon as you opened it up and really gave it some, the crankcase pressure would be too great and oil would leak out of the front pulley make a right mess. They're not the nicest looking things but in large engines that you give some, i'd recommend.

There was a thread on Cal-look.com about them. A couple people said they leak but could be fixed.

I use a Berg BreatherBox plus a BugPack one working as the T connection for the Lines that go to the Valve covers on my 2276cc...

Works great!!!

No, Not for the Looks... Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

The Berg Breather Box is connected with -8AN Hose to the Engine Case via the Fuel Pump Block off plate, from the Berg Box goes a -8AN Hose to the small Bugpack Box which is the connected with -8AN Hose to the Valve Covers!!!

The Small Bugpack Box is way to small for a big CC motor and in my opinion should only be use a "T" connection...

I suppose by adding the berg box you allow the engine to breathe even more?  Wink

I've always wondered why you connect it to the case via the fuel pump cover? Isn't connected to the case already via the oil inlet?
