Good eye, well, they used to be 7&8. Now the 7 is a 8 and the 8 is a 9.

The wheels are now on the car, along with a 1915, and a close ratio rack and pinion.

The handling is improved. Wink

Upgraded to sealed beams a few days ago, nice and curved compared to the Golf units it had earlier.

I have constantly been working on getting this car in better shape ever since I got it back. The paint started deteriorating quite rapidly after it was painted back in the early nineties, the materials wasn't up to the use I put it to.
But the years of bad storage since I sold it has left the car with blisters in the paint and generally tatty finish. I have been trying to fix the worst areas and it has looked decent from a distance the last couple of years. But when you come up on it it's horrible. So it's time to rub it all down to bare metal and repaint it.

I started with the front of the car since it had some rust in the bumper mounts and a bad front panel.

Gone.

I removed the front screen and found... nothing to my surprise!

When I found rust in the strut tower in addition to the rust in the bumper area, as well as collision damages both before and aft the tower, I decided to get rid of it all.

Scary looking hole for sure.  Lips Sealed

But I had a couple of NOS panels in store, one 1302 and one 1303 part.
Unfortunately there was some surface rust on the 03 part, so I had to sandblast it first.

Someone had cut away the lower corner of it, so I had to recreate it.

The two parts:

Next action point was to replace original rusty doors, I have been collecting doors for this car for the longest time, but when I looked more closely on the doors, non was good enough.
I decided to locate some NOS doors to get around the problem, I first found a set set of standard doors, but they were the wrong year it turned out. So I keept looking and two days later Mags sendt me a link to two NOS Mexican doors that turned out to be more or less identical to the original doors on the car.

To get the doors to fit right I had to tweak the front most body mount, and recreate this "nut case".

Result, better than ever before fit, and nice and parallel gaps.

Then I started closing up some excess holes in the new panel, these panels are genuine Volkswagen parts, but they are sort of universal when it comes to holes.

It fits the car quite nicely and only needed minor adjustments due to shelf life.

Nice even gaps.

And in the foot well.

A little test of the front panel.

On to a little customizing.

External tank filler hole gone.

Then I removed the channels for the hood sealer.

This brings us up to today. One of the last things I did was to remove the hole for the wing mirrors and those pesky trim holes.

Thanks Gwar72  Smiley

Moving right along on the car, to get the best result I brought the car over to the local body shop and we used their state of the art spotwelder

Then it was time to wrap it up again and bring it back to our shop to do the remaining welding.

Thanks Nicolas and Rick! The shop is 700 square meters of joy Nicolas, but still smaller than Belgium I would say Cheesy

The red dust is flying...

Fiddling with the front to get everything to line up.

I managed to get the new front panel welded back on yesterday.
First I applied some of Volvos excellent weld primer.

And to the panel itself.

And on with the spot welder.

A quick test with the new left fender
