The thought of taking a short-wheel base 911 S and turning it into a race car would make some purists cringe. However, finding a 911 with race history in its blood from day one is something very special and rare.

42 years later, this 911 S race car has survived with very little incident or issues. It has had a great history going back to its first owner: Joe Vittone, the president and CEO of Empi (a famous VW/Porsche after market products company). Joe purchased this 911 new in ’67 and used it to help market some of his aluminum pistons and cylinders. In 1969, as a performance marketing promotion, Bob Bondurant was asked to put the car through its paces at Riverside Raceway. Bondurant was so impressed not only with the cars performance, but also with it’s bright tangerine color, that he adopted tangerine for his driving school cars. This occasion was documented in the February 1969 issue of Sports Car Graphic.

The second owner was an oil businessman and Porsche lover who cared for the car as a streetcar until 1995. This is when the current owner purchased the car and started to fulfill his vintage racing interests. What started as a three-month project took well over a year and as you can imagine, tens of thousands of dollars. However, all the money and time paid off with Vara CP class championships in 1998 and 2001.

All in all, this 911 has be featured in 2 issues of Excellence Magazine including the cover in 2002 as well as the cover for the Early S magazine called Esses.

Here are the mechanical details:

2.5L 060 Overbore

In 2005, the owner spent over $12,000 freshening up the engine and gearbox. He was then out of racing until 2006. He did a couple of events between 2006-2007 and the car has been in storage since then.

This is a turn-key Porsche race car that is ready to be enjoyed. It is fresh, all set up, and a proven winner.

This Porsche comes with its original steel doors, hood, decklid, and original door windows.

How did you stumble on that, Bill? did you punch in Joe Vittone's Porsche, and that popped up?

I think the statement "We freshened up the engine" translates into "we through out all those Empi parts".

Would that car be worth more if it was returned to street trim, or as a racecar, not streetable?

In my opinion, I believe it would be more desireable returned to it's vintage spec's including the Empi modifications.
The current owner wiped out all it's history by replacing almost everything.
It now reminds me of the "George Washington's Hatchet" story.

You're biased!!

I agree Wink

The car looks like it's been raced for a long time, and has simply "evolved" Undecided

my friend J Holleran stumbled across a similar, though not as cooly revered (in the VW world) 911S a few years back. Grungy, house-paint battleship grey paint job, 1967 "S" car, with American Racing mags (hammered pretty bad), old timer roll cage, some light weight stuff on it. Found it in a trailer park in north Napa CA for something like $3K, pen-knifed some of the bad paint off, and car stll had bright orange and yellow livery underneath. Turns out the car had race history on the west coast.
You just never can tell...

this car is cool, but the big alloys look too modern.
