New face, new project... Here's my 66 Bug, owned it for about 18 months and now I've got my backside into gear and started working on it.

Sorry Guys,

I've replaced the image links with some from my Flickr account, seems posterous doesn't like you linking to images...

Anyway plans at the moment are to sort out the couple of areas of rot, then build it up for racing. As I don't have any budget I'm going to stick with the 1600/twin 40 IDF set up and see how I go. Theory is, if I put the car on a diet, I might be able to squeeze out some extra 1/10ths...

Hi Kaferboy,

I'm in Bexleyheath, Kent.

I'm hoping I can get a respectable time out of the 1600, it pulls nicely on the street. It is slightly over jetted at the moment and is going to need an electric fuel pump to help with the starting issue I have. If I can keep the weight down I might be able to achieve reasonable times.

Welcome to the lounge Dereck .
What starting issue ? you should not have too many probs with 44idf's on a stock pump with a 1600 .
I still run a stock pump with 48 ida's on a 2165.
40's should be fine on a stock 1600 motor with the correct jetting .

Cheers for the kind words. I could be persuaded to part with the wheel & boss. I don't think it's a genuine Thump Thump wheel, but it could be. It's coming off this weekend, so I can take a proper look at it.

Not posted an update for quite a while, to be honest I lost motivation again. Any I seem to have picked up a bit of incentive, which has nothing to do with me turning 40 next March and not having a cool ride...

I spent the other evening going over my Bug again. Trying to work out if the body is as bad as I thought...


The bottom of the left A-post will have to be replaced.


So that's three patches on the right heater channel. One with home made vents... One runs the full length of the door opening, which is spot welded to the top of the heater channel and the floorpan, why?


I managed to break the spot welds with only a screw driver. Looks like the bottom of the channel is rotten, I'll know more once I get the seats out and remove the offending plate.

Decisions over the back end, it's been cut off already for easy access, but I don't like how it's been done. This shot shows how it was done. The box tubing is used to locate the back end which is held in place with a pinch bolt.


Ideally, I'd like just the rear valance removable. Should I weld it all back on the remove the valance?

Over the summer a few things got in the way of me updating my build thread, but now it’s time for an update. As I previously mentioned I had located another body shell to replace the 66’s. After checking it out in person I decided to go for it. Well it’s not often a RHD 54 shell lands at you’re feet is it? OK I know the 66 would probably be an easier and quicker project, but I couldn’t turn down this opportunity.

The new shell does need a lot of work, it’s had some hefty patching over it’s life, but still retains it’s original heater channels - although heavily modified. Someone has also cut a darn great hole in the roof too, guess I’m going to have to fine a rag-top to fill it with? It’s all home safely tucked up beside the 66 ready for me to start work on.

Last night I sold the 66 shell, guy turned you with a long wheelbase can and we squeezed it in. So that now leaves me with a rolling floorpan, ready to crack on.
