Exactly! It takes a long time to go in and clean that mess up before coating/painting! Then again, not many have metal & fab skills GabFab possesses ... wish I could.
If you taught a class, I'd enroll.

My only question is how'd you come to 104? Makes sense, just would like to know how you got to that particular number  (trial & error?)... especially if you use that setting for different cams ... just very curious. Think I'll try it!
Also, the plenum manifold would be interesting to try on smaller carbs, like 40s. Possible they'd still meter low, but you'd also have both to pull on up high ... Huh Prolly depends on how much plenum you allow too ... and they'd need to be the same on each side ... starting to get complicated.
Too ... working on a small chamber street engine ... seem to remember you like that kind. Should get interesting when the chips start flyin off the flycutter!

Valvetrain events are the things I'd really like to get to know much better ... I get the basics and understand the potential effects/affects ... just wanna know where it comes from. Where does the magic happen & why? I admire anyone that knows how to make the magic happen. I'd like to think I've come close a few times ... hmmm ... you've got me thinkin" I need to put together a 'trial' engine to try and get a better view of THE BIG PICTURE.
I guess I can't quite make out the trees in the forest ... YET!
Everytime you think you know, turn the page and there's another lesson to learn.

Hi Tom, this has to be one of the most motivational posts round these parts in a while at least for me... it's a blast discussing this stuff.
I came upon 104 from a few reasons....  like I had posted somewhere up above, I was looking for point where on intake stroke (or exh, really, but...) where piston is at max velocity. Somewhere between (this was over 10 years ago now) the cut 94mm cylinder (cut in half longwise, like splitting a banana), a degree wheel, my Bosch handbook and screwing around with trig, it seemed that "104" was the magic number... it isn't, but ... the other reasons supported this, sort of, meaning a number of "engine guys" I talked to about cam timing, always suggested "104" (but they said "to make this cam run, advance it 4 deg"). One motor, believe it or not, I set up @ 102, but it was a 280@ .050 deal. Made good power too, peak @ 7100 with 40mm vents (2276).
somewhere I remember the number "72" coming into play, but now I don't remember where or why.  Roll Eyes

It would be neat to have a set with a easy way of blocking the plenum, So on the dyno it could be back to backed. Also plenum volume would be important I bet.

I wonder what the "other cylinder" is going to tell the pair of circuits though... meaning the one on compress or exh (Int valve still open?), with the usual manifolds, barrel # 3 has no clue what barrel # 4 is doing, unless one robs the other of fuel (dry float bowl).

I'm sure Doug has a better answer and explanation on "104"

total newb to vw's  , more on the honda inline 4 stuff's and oddly enough some wisdom in the vw world works for inline 4s and maybe some on the inline 4s would work, maybe not.. but im sure  since their both IC engines..  i know id enjoy the knowledge..


back earlier (hope its not too late) Jim mentioned about  camming,  (hopefully not too overcammed)  a decent/small port or high velocity port'd engine,  in theory i think that should up the VE  if done right, provided the induction system is working in conjunction to the engine+ rpm + displacement and rod ratio , together once again with the exhaust system,

obviously there is more : over cammed, big daddy ports and big jugged motor, that tends to be lazy.. 

is there room to ramble about high velocity ports (provided we dont go to sonic choke) and hefty cams (duration)

?

To be honest, this is one of your first posts I could completely understand  Grin
I know for a streetcar it would be best to have more power down low, for drivability and all,
now, drivability or good manners dont really interest me ( maybe ignorance or lack of experience ),
I drive a diesel everyday, so for my weekend car I want a beast that turns some revs and keeps going harder.
I know I will have to sacrifice reliabitity, and drivability in traffic jams etc, but for me I think it will be worth the power on top, I thought because of the rpms, the HP gain (with retarded cam)would be higher compared to the torque gain (with advanced cam) off course it all depends on what people want..
I just love the screaming of my motor in that region. I am sorry, I am stubborn Smiley
