oil in head question.....

 i removed my carbs and manifolds last week to give them an overhall. i went back up to the workshop today to clean the old gasgets off the heads when i noticed that there is oil sitting in the inlet ports off cylinders 3 and 4 . can anyone tell where it has come from? is it the piston o rings?
  any help would be most helpful as i dont want to create unnessesery work for myself

How are your valve guides?  Might be coming past the guides if they are bad.

Compression check.

worn out guides could not be detected with an normal compression check thru spark hole.
A little bit leakage at the valve guides is normal as they have no seal as modern cars have...So some dips of oil are quite normal.

Let a friend drive behind you and he should look if the exhasut gas is blue shaded. Yust to get it right if it is blue it could even be the rings and that could be detected tru compression check.
Another method to check would be to make a plate with an pressureadapter were the manifold normaly sits and close the valve of the prt you want to test an go for it.

cool.thanks for the help. i think i will just leave it then. if it starts buning oil out the exhaust then i will do some thing about it...

The usual sign of worn guides is a puff of smoke from the exhaust when you close the throttle.
