I grew up in San Antonio and did occasionally get a chance to visit Alamo dragway way down on the other side of town. I'd go with my brother (on the rare occasion he would take me!) when he ran his bug, which I still own and run today.
I remember seeing this car very well. It was purple in color and ran in H and/or I Gas back in the day and was very fast. Wish I could run across some color photos ...
Never got to get too close to it, but I was just a punk kid back then.

... this was back in the early and mid '70s!

If I'm not mistaken, the Stuttgart Express later turned into "Sudden Impact", which was owned and driven by Charlie Dickerson for quite a few years. I believe that the car was one of the early low nine second door cars; powered by a mechanically injected, turbocharged motor on alchohol. David "Pappy" Crow is has been friends with the former owners for years, and could probably tell us a lot more about it.

The car went to east Texas in 2003 or 2004, was run a few times, went to a different East TX owner in early 2006, and is still there as far as I know.

Here are a few photos of the car that I took back in May of 2004, which is the last time that I saw the car. If I did some digging, I might be able to find some pics of the car from the late '80s or 'early '90s when when Charlie Dickerson was racing it.

Very cool Eric!
I remember seeing Charlie run that car at the first Texas Bug-Ins at Green Valley Raceway back in the late 80s.
Never knew or guessed it was the early Stuttgart Express car!

Another I remember but have no photos of was run by a guy named Pat in San Antonio out of the Buggy Shop ... ran H or I/Gas I believe.
I bet Dave (also affectionately known to us as 'The Birdman!') would remember that car from back in the day.
Last I heard, and as of 10 or so years ago, the car was still in the back of his shop, untouched since all those years ago.
Pat has since passed some years ago and I have no idea what became of the car.

I think the Mini Mite was driven by Paul Bernardo, a longtime Bug-In bracket 1 racer.

The gentleman on the far right of this picture is Mike Childers, who was the high school shop teacher of these lucky high school members who built the car. This car was at several bug-ins.

Wink
Thanks for posting better pictures of Bug Magik!!  You know, Scooter still has Bug Magik completely in tact in his shop garage, original crazy paint job and all.  Also, The inside of his shop has VW murals on the walls done by the same artist (the artist has long since passed away).  I was trying to encourage him to bring this car out once again, either to shows or even to race it.  He told me he didn't think people would appreciate it.  I told him that the car was a piece of VW racing history in Florida and the East Coast but he still didn't want to take it out/ Sad  Bummer, this car is well built, very cool and a time capsule for sure.

The Stuttgart Express was built in San Antonio, Texas by Glen Williams and crew.  It was the AHRA K/gas record holder in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.  The 1981 record was set at 11.29.

Later, it was painted white and became the Sudden Impact and eventually went turbo power.  At the 1985 Bug-In at Green Valley, it ran a 9.88, breaking Bob McClure's sedan turbo record, held since 1979.

The car has a new owner, as of March of this year, and is being restored as the Stuttgart Express.

These photos were found in the HVW's archives.
