I know that the DKP (Generation 1) guys probably have the first official Cal Lookers...even though the official look seemed to be coined in the HVWs issue in 1975. Lets see some of your first lookers that were built in late 60's or early 70's. Share some of your history with others.
This was a 67 I built with my newlywed wife Anne (in 1977). It had original EMPI 5's on it, crazy plaid interior, OPEL GT VDO gauge's, 1688cc motor with dual Weber's, ported heads (Stock Valves), merged Fourtuned exhaust, 010 Distributor, Sig Erson cam and rockers, stock trans originally. It was a great freeway car. We drove it to events and I bracket raced it periodically. Not my fastest bug to that point but a good driving car.

These are mine in the early eighties
The pink one is a 69er with a 1679 double 40mm dell engine
The red scallopped one is also a 69er with a 1914 ida engine in it.

Here is a shot taken at Irvine Park in 1969 or early 1970. This is post original Ruby Red and pre Butternut. The 69 x 88 engine was built by Ron Fleming when he and Greg Aronson worked at Gene Berg. This also featured a 110 Engle, flycut heads with high compression (you couldn't get away with it today's fuel) and a Holley Bug Spray. Ron always refereed to this engine as "Teats Two Barrell". In this configuration the car ran mid 15's at OCIR.

John,
Butternut is an icon, but I sure like how it looked here!
Dig the original 356 rims... long before Brazilian wheels. Did you custom build the wide rears?

Not pre-75..... but, here is my 67 I built in 1977 Riverside CA.
De-chromed, fresh Java green paint, original Empi 5s, 1835, Berg C/W crank, engle 110, Zenith carb, FourTuned exhaust.
Guess I was influenced by Feb 75 Hot VWs

John,
Love your car with the chrome wheels. The first 66 I bought in 1969-1970 had all the chrome, was the factory red, white interior and had chrome wheels. I will have to dig up a shot...(if I can find it). I sucked a valve on #3 from twisting that old 1300cc stock motor too tight that only had an extractor and 010 distributor on it. That led to my first bigger street engine (92x74/1968cc).

OgCalLook,
Looks like you finished your 67 the same year I did the white one. I liked the article in HVWs too. Was a great time. I had a 66 that was the color of yours. I will have to post some shots. Actually, you can see it on my facebook page. Query Rick VW Mortensen on Facebook and it will take you to my page. I have some shots of some of my cars shown there.

Early 1976 - not really Cal Look but influenced by it! Fresh from the paintshop (OK, my friend's single-car garage, with a borrowed compressor…), my European ’67 early in 1976. 1500 with dual-choke Weber, cam, headwork and Ansa glasspack muffler. Lowered in front, dechromed and with Lucas turn signals. Still on stock wheels, but widened to 5.5J on the back with 165 + 145 radials. Yeehah!
Oh, and my dad's metallic green Renault 12 in the background.

Dave,
Thanks for your comments. I guess the Butternut car is an icon and I'm still mystified about that one. Someday when times are better I might try to do a "tribue car" to my original.
I've always liked the Porsche style wheel. As I recall these were simply the 15 x 5.5 which are the same thing I have on my current '63 sedan. Did you catch the logos on the nipple caps? Those were taken from "Original" DKP decals and it took some doing as the cap wasn't flat and the cut decal didn't want to lay down correct.

Rick,
As just stated I've always liked that wheel with either the stock cap or Porsche style. Jim (Sarge) Edmiston has told me more than once he liked my car in this configuation more than any other. When the car was like this I sure had some fun times with all of the guys back in the day.
Great Memories

I noticed the emblems looked a little different! I can see it... nice touch!
I thought the rears looked a little deeper than the basic 5.5" rim... Hard to say, but whatever it is it sure looked good.

My old 59 Bug, now now more unfortunately.
It was a shed, but I loved it. Basically stock engine with a velocity stack, power pulley, 010 dissy and a glasspack muffler.

Promise not to laugh!
This is a photo of the plaque that used to reside in the Keep on Buggin' clubhouse. I recently ran across it along with the glovebox door I kept (because of rally plaques) when I later sold the body (long story).
Anyway, the photo was taken in 1974... I was the tender age of 16 (told the club members I was 18
)
Photo was taken at El Dorado park in Long Beach, CA at a club outing.
The car is a 1964 Sunroof, plenty low front and rear, 1500S engine, mystery cam, Holley Bugspray 010, and S&S exhaust.
I had two other early Cal-Look cars in quick succession before this one, I'll try to find photos.
Needless to say, at 16 I was on a budget. I had no help from my parents, so what you see is what I hustled for... I used to eat, drink & sleep VW's back then... good times
