Thanks Mark... just another po boy doing the best he could with what he had
I know it all too much. Having to buy and build my first car (and every car thereafter) with my measly minimum wage jobs, I did the same thing.
Unless I find older images, these are the oldest ones that I have from when I first built my orange '66 in '79.
Yes, that's an original EMPI glass fuel filter. I have a n.o.s. one, too. I'll probably end up selling it.
1,679cc (yes, the dreaded slip-in 88mm cylinders), dual port heads, stock cam, 1.25 ratio rockers, single Holley progressive two barrel carb, S&S single quiet pack, Bosch 6v blue coil, and a Bosch .009 distributor. It was all that I could afford at the time... but my friends and I had a blast driving it around.

Nice looking car Mark!
The orange was perfect...
When did the EMPI 5's go on... around 81? Hard to remember that far back

Oh, gee... I don't know. I'm guessing around '81 or '82. Bought 'em from a guy named Dave Rosique.
Which was after the 8 spokes and the Fuchs 2.0 Liters. But before the Porsche (real) 356 B wheels.

They sure looked better after you owned 'em!
Thinking back, it must have been around '81, that's when I bought my Jetta, sold the T3
So... no Centerlines?

You sly dawg... you KNOW I can't stand those wheels.
So, how long has the current Oval been in your ownership?

Oh Mark, I'm sure I saw your car with full polished Centerlines, 195/50's, and chrome three spoke knock offs
>>Just kidding!!
Anyway, I've owned the Oval about five years or so... I used to work on the same car back in the 70's at H&H... it came up for sale and I had to have it.

Nice 66 Mark!!
Looking at that pic brings back memories - late 70s - I was just a kid who wrenched on VWs - no computers, cell phones, hell that was before punk rock!

Same here, but by the time I was building this car in '79, I was already turned on to listening to punk music by two good friends of mine. Dave & Rayburn, you know one of 'em... Ray Z. The other one, my boss's older brother, introduced me to KROQ in '78. From that point, it was ON. Met a few guys in D.K.K. shortly after and was stoked that a few of 'em surfed, listened to punk, and even skateboarded. (coughSchwimmerGaskeycough)
Thanks for the kind words, Tom.
