I'm about to order a new exhaust system for my Ghia. In terms of looks, I'd prefer a black ceramic coating. Are there any drawbacks? I'm just wondering as most of the headers and mufflers are silver ceramic coated.

Black is more durable and with a higher temp rating.

Agreed... hence why I opted to stay away from it, as well. Pity, 'cause the concept is rather nice.

weird,the process I have seen done starts with the silver,then the black on top,guess you get different varieties/brands?

Luftkraft,the black costs more,apart from that it seems just as good to me,only been using it for a year and 1/2 though

Agree with Richie, my coater does the silver base then adds black on top. Looks great but is more expensive.

imho
from a performance point of view colour isnt so important ,
as heat is needed to be took out of the motor yet kept in the exhaust to aid scavanging if your coating performs this task well it can be any colour it likes  Grin

from a cosmetic point of view i like black .
matt black also has the added advantage of being more stable when taking temperature readings on the motor .

i suppose it depends on if you want a performance coating or a cosmetic coating , but if you get a quality performance coating on your exhaust it will probobly be white Wink but it can be coloured over the top .

there is a lot of hype and marketing bull around , but this mainly comes from the exhaust colouring companies , not the exhaust insulating companies Wink

if you want black only for cosmetic reasons , just buy some barbque paint or engine block paint .

richie , you stand to gain the most from a quality coating , as the scavanging aspect increases gas velocity and helps keep the figures there which will help turbo response .

The silver is 3 mil thick and the black is 1 mil. My experience has always been they do the silver then they put the black over it. Since the black is so thin it is very easy to scratch the surface. The best method (in my opinion) is to have them do the silver then scotchbrite the surface and paint it with a good high temp paint. If you get any scratches it is easy to do touch ups (something you can't do with the black coating.

Well, being the owner of the coated turbo system shown above here I would like to share my experience. As you can see the exhaust is satin black and I find it very scratch resistant, no problems at all. The intake parts are all glossy black and as all glossy paints it is "easier" to scratch. But this is no problem at all since the coating is so thick, I can always rub and remove any marks. Before this black system I used a system that was silver coated. I did get some oil on it that I wanted to remove, I used Scotchbrite and lynol and was very suprised how easy I could remove the ceramic coating.

My turbo system is made by TW Engineering. Great guy, great work! He did the coating.

Not thought about it for a second. First priority is to get the engine done and to get the car ready for the coming season. Lot`s of new things to wrap my head around.... sure miss my IDA`s sometimes  Smiley
