Danny,
I am using 18 gauge, only because the earlier German original tin was so stout. The aftermarket parts are crap for fit and gauge. I have found some of the aftermarket stuff as much as .008 to .010 thinner. So, I prefer straightening an original piece whenever possible, unless is is rusted out.
You are doing some really nice stuff.
