thanks for the comments, there is a good weeks work left to get it completely finished and following the mission getting it there it was reward enough having it in the show. Getting a top 20 was a very unexpected surprise!

Quick update, and a belated thank you to all who helped me finish the car and get it to Volksworld, you know who you are . I have had the car on the street now and first drive out took me to Santa Pod for Bug Jam 25 where it didn't miss a beat on the way up. Unfortunately it blew the oil cooler up there on the saturday, so the sunday was spent under it swearing, hot and covered in oil. It drove home faultlessly though. I also took it out to a show in East Sussex where it won best pre '67 beetle and ran fine. Next was back to Santa Pod for its first run on the track. It drove there faultlessly and once there I signed on to race. First time on the track for both myself and the car so no hero stuff here, but after "driving" it gently off the line and "driving" it up the track it ran a 15.44 @ 92.18mph. Car is still only running 10psi boost so I was pleased that it felt planted and ran really straight. Next run out I put it into race mode, big burn out, up to the line and launching at around 4000rpm, gearbox went bang big time! Car is now parked up over winter while I am saving for parts, which I have sorted most of now. Weddle chromo main shaft with 1st and 2nd gears. German splined 3.88 ring and pinion with early 4-bolt pinion bearing and a new Magnesium rhino case. Hoping to get a quaife diff in there if money allows. It will be out again next year. I need to firstly sort out the traction issues (think it is just shock absorber adjustment) and run it as is for now. I think there is a 13 in it as is, then I will up the boost and see what happens ouch! panic set in, should have stopped immediately

I would have shot peened the ring'n pinion for max strength and done what ever possible to prevent flexing in order to keep your R/P alive. When you have done whatever possible to make sure its up to the task I would focus on how you pre-load your car. Last I would have saved enough money for spare gearbox so when this one breaks you are not out of the season.

Yes, I agree that shot peening may well be a plan. I did try and pre-load the box on launch with the handbarake but unfortunately I think that there needs to be some work done on suspension set up next time out because there was apparently some wheel hop present. The car cannot really be tied in any more than it is already so I think stiffening up the rear shocks should help with this. As for saving up for another spare box, well I am struggling to get the money together for a replacement box, never mind an additional spare! The car is mainly a street car so hopefully this "built" box will stand the test of time, especially if I don't get too carried away

The car cannot really be tied in any more than it is already so I think stiffening up the rear shocks should help with this. Actuallly there so more stiffening that you can do and need to do -- having fought this issue with my '56 this is what cured it -- You need to tie in your roll cage to the trans horns right near where you rear solid trans mounts are at -- once that is firmed up and tied in most of your wheel hop will be gone -- QA1 shocks from Lumus will help a ton also

I am thinking about solid mounting the whole lot now, I know it will be noisy but I can put up with it.

I have tied my cage to my frame horns exactly as you did and did not have any problems with them , but I do think your motor and tranny mounts are flexing on your launch. I agree with you that solid mounting both may eliminate your tire shake, beautiful car and well built. Mike McCarthy

Thanks for your kind comments I think it will go solid mounted and also put a removable rose jointed brace between the gearbox cradle and the rear stay of the cage as it will be far easier to do it now and it certainly cannot cause any harm, Alex

Finally got the car mapped on the dyno yesterday. They managed to get a nice smooth power curve and 233hp @ 10psi followed by 265hp @ 16psi. Compression on my engine is set at 7.4:1 so 20psi should be fine. Pleased with that, already feels lively on the street!
