Great pictures! Thanks Jo.
I haven't been to the Sand Drags since '93... Any VW-powered vehicles still in competition?

Steph
Steph, there were somewhere between 12/15 Vw powered[well flat 4 anyway
] vehicles that I saw, from really old 2 seat rails with ARPM and Autocraft engines to modern dragster rails with pauter engines, heres Mario of Pauter fames rail, with part of the turbo missing as they bent the shaft and were away getting it fixed, also a sidewinder style rail which supposedly ran 80% methanol with 20% Nitro
And then a Blown V8 Alcohol dragster,it was an experience for sure
cheers richie

Cool pictures!! That sidewinder is some serious engineering. Many years ago, I remember Jeff Mamer of Brawley, Ca. and his mechanically injected piece... it hauled ass!

That Rolls Royce is awesome!
How long are the races 1/8 of a mile or? What kind of speeds do they reach?

Mad stuff , must be the way to go as they can't need to have the track shut for too long after an oil down with all that sand to mop it up

Cool pics...
I know nothing at all about the sand drags, looks like it would be hard on the machinery! how do the 60ft's compare to running on a drag strip? You know, 12 against a 12? Just wondering how well they get the power down...
VERY cool.

I have a friend who used to have a Jr. Fuel dragster many years ago. He noted that hooking up on sand was a lot like leaving on pavement after a few passes in our old buggy. We used to run 7lbs of air for duning and 4-5 lbs at the hill on Saturday night... good enough to yank the front end a foot and set you back hard in the seat. I remember being at Glamis one weekend and hooking up with a bunch of hard-core guys from Brawley. I got my ass whipped by guys in lighter cars with less motor but way more knowledge on car set up (a heavy flywheel will launch your car NICE in the sand). I don't feel that sand is any harder on an engine, either... just make sure you have EVERYTHING sealed up. There's never a shortage of exotic cars to look at, too...

The bottom pic is Al Noriega's car. Al was the Parts Mgr. at Renfree VW in the early '70's and was instrumental in steering me to the dunes. Al also had a bad ass sand drag car with a FAT built motor. My first sand drags were on the beach in Oxnard with Al.

I am sorry that I missed the event, as the TF record was set by Scott Whipple. Very serious power these guys are running. A video of Scott's run is available:
