Driving Hot VWs for 44 Years Strong!

« on: April 18, 2010, 19:30:52 pm »

My personal preference for rods is Carrillo when it is justified but I just can't bring myself to buying another set for a street motor when I can get a crank, rods and flywheel for a nice street engine that does not need all the high dollar parts.

What "H" Beam rods have you all had success with that are not Carrillo?  I have used BUGPACK in a motor that ran very well.  Of all the rods available,  how would you compare CB to Bugpack, EAGLE, and others that are out there for VWs.  I prefer the Carrillo's due to the factory offset on the big end of the rod....but I have not seen adverse affects from running the Bugpack rods in a 2110 street entine I had.  I could not see a distiguishable difference on the rod bearing, piston wear, etc.

What are your opinions about what is out there? I've not tried a set of the CB's but some of my friends swear by them. Would be interested in rods and rod bearing combos everyone is now using.  I also like the CLEVITE bearings.  I've had good success with them...but then again their may be something newer on the market I am not aware of.  Opinions?

X2 on the Eagle rods, my past engines I've used 5.5 Eagles, no problems. Using Jet rods from Berg now, but would not hesitate to use the Eagles again.

Eagle is not the same as CB or Bugpack. Eagle was made in the US by Eagle. I had bought mine when Eagle was selling them, themselfs, way back.

I hear ya, now just about all come from China, except Pauter, Carrilo, maybe a couple of  other's. Also depends where they are machined and QC.

I have both and they are night and day different. The CB's have better machined surfaces, but the Eagle's are machined to the correct dimensions. My CB's were .010 too narrow on the big end.

My last set of Bugpack 5.5 H beams were in fact Eagle rods with Eagle/ARP bolts. CBs are not the same.
