I'm working on a mate's engine - he has a (repro) Bosch 009 with Pertronix I Ignitor fitted.  Advance curve is 27 degrees which I think is that of the Bosch 050.  This is too much advance, would prefer the standard 009 20 degrees of total advance.

Is the advance wrong becuase the dizzy is a repro (not sure about their reliability) or has the wrong ignitor module been fitted here?  Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Phil,

the repro 009's are complete toss, not found one yet that actually worked ok, either too much or too little advance or even none at all, I'd try and find an old one from somewhere,

Cheers Andy, I had heard a few bad reports on the repro ones, currently I am planning to try to find a new Bosch 009 of reputable quality - just wondered what other people had found with those repro ones.  Anyway if you've seen different advances on the repro ones it supports what I am seeing.  GSF used to offer two different quality 009's - the repro one with a kind of scripted lettering on the back side kind of written with a machine dot punch type of thing, that was £35.  Then they did a proper Bosch one stamped on the front with all the right part number etc., that was £90 I think.  Says it all really.

I've tested knockoff oo9s and found total advance from 12 degrees to 40 degrees. Generally the dwell is unstable and wanders.

They are junk.

Or replace it with a 019 or 010 distributor, depending on the engine specs.

Cheers mate in fact he's got a Pertronix package on the way now.  Hopefully this thread will stop anyone else considering a repro 009.  His engine was a Remtec - evidently they use repro 009s now so I guess if you buy one you need to change the dizzy before running it.  Timing was stated on their spec sheet as 20 degrees total advance, all in at 27 degress.  The factory wax mark on the dizzy position was unbroken.  When tested was 16 degrees on idle and 43 all in.  350 miles covered from new.

Cheers

Never had problems with my 009 in the past apart from the 1/2 second lag which feels like a kickdown in an automatic. Is there anyway to check if it's German or China-made?

And with the cast iron models, there's no question... it says it in plain sight.
