When Bruce Simurda approached him at the SEMA show in Vegas this past November, and asked him to sign my photo, he was all smiles. No problem as he wrote exactly what we asked him to... So, our experince at that level was good, but I know others weren't so lucky. Hard to say, but I do know that Billy Mitchell did talk to the Schleys not too long ago, and Mitchell admitted that his times were bogus to a certain extent.
In the new Motion Performance book that came out a few months ago, Mitchell could have easily taken the opportunity to claim the "First in the Ten" title, but he didn't. Tells me a lot. When others have asked him about records and proof, he never seem to have much left in his collection. But, when you talk to, and see what the Schley's have on file, and I do mean serious notes, time slips and photos!, you tend to believe the Schley brothers over Mitchell.

Thanks to Fabs for the Billy Mitchell reprints. Didn't know Motion had two cars at the same time. But I still wonder where the old Dean Lowry car went....
Here is a framed and matted photo of Billy Mitchell, signed in person, "First in the Tens".... (Paul Schley hates this photo...)
I'd read somewhere that Mr. Mitchell will not talk about his VW racing days at all anymore, and is quite rude about it. I think it was over on UAC that somebody mentioned this, which I found really strange. Did the 'first in the 10s' claim create a lot of bad blood between Mitchell and the Schleys?

That's interesting stuff. I certainly can't speak from experience, as I haven't met Mr. Mitchell at any time, but like I said, it was purely through second hand postings or such that I read that. Anybody can have a bad day, I reckon, lol.

I thought the same thing... But by then, the Schleys had sold their car to Diego in Puerto Rico and went with the T-4 dragster. I will have to ask Paul and that one...
