After a brief phone call with fellow DKP member last night, we thought it might be fun to see what guys have in mind if given the opportunity to build a brutal but dead- nuts reliable race motor around a 69mm crank. Bore size, heads, CR, valve timing, etc is wide open. No turbo.

I remember Performance Technology sponsored a 'Super 1600' class back in the early 1990s that never seemed to get off the ground.  There was a car called "Genesis" that I think was built to the class specs, was on the Samba a couple years ago for sale.  Sorry for the digression, just jogged my memory! Jim, are you referring to the standard issue Type 1 case for it's base, or is the Vanagon case an option on this? If so, then I'd vote for the latter. Still haven't forgotten that one that Schwimmer and I drove that night at Nick's. If I had the money, THAT would be my engine. Reliable, doesn't rev too high, and a blast to drive. Like having a high performance 911 engine in a Type 2. Which I'll never forget, either.

And yes, like Zach posted, I'd go for the 4" pistons on that.

Nice thread.  I am actually pondering the idea of building a 1700cc high compression monster for my oval and would love to hear ideas.
