Need some advice guys, Jick is trying to set up his rear axles and spool. He is in Wales no where near the internet and needs some advice.
He is going to run a spool, it has no place for circlips to retain the axles, how does he set the axle tubes up regarding play etc.
Also does anybody know the length of short axle tubes, he bought some last year and he thinks he has been given long axle tubes instead.

You don't need any circlips if you have a spool. Just put some grease on the fuclrum plates so they stay in place and put in the axle spade.
The wheel bearing keeps the axle in the right position.

Cheers Roman, thats what I thought. Do you set up the axle tube the same way as you would if you were using a dif?
Does anybody know the length of short axle tubes?

Don't now the lengt of a short axle tube, but it's easy to see... the cast piece on the end is much shorter then on the long types...

Just went out to measure it, the casted endpiece measures 8,5cm on the short versions... measured from the backing plate to the end of the casted piece. Hope you kinda understand what I mean  |

thanks Lids for posting, and also those who advised.....much appreciated, at least i know now for certain i have the short outeraxles....i dont have a problem setting the axles up at the gearbox end, what's confusing me can be seen in the photo's below..... 1) this shows how much (or little) axle is protruding at the bearing end.....you can see the other axle and compare how much of it is recessed, (its about 1.5")......this just doesnt look right to me at all?? it doesnt look like theres enough room for the drum......  to compare...here is a stock axle set up..(long)  maybe you can understand why i thought my outers were the long type..... but they aren't?? any idea's people?? |

what's the length of your axles jick? bugpack catalogue states 61-66 26 11/16" 67 27 13/16" 68- 28 7/16" as far as i can remember the only difference between the 67 and 68- axles is the splined end on a 67 is slightly shorter to fit an early drum  |

what's the length of your axles jick? bugpack catalogue states 61-66 26 11/16" 67 27 13/16" 68- 28 7/16" as far as i can remember the only difference between the 67 and 68- axles is the splined end on a 67 is slightly shorter to fit an early drum I'll confirm Ben's memory on the difference between 67 & 68 axles. |

managed to do a little more work on the car over easter.............. in case anyone's interested it turns out that my outer axles consisted of a combination of long tubes with the type 1 early short end castings....and they were actually wider each side than a normal long axle outer assembly, and the inner face where the spring plate bolts to was about 2.5" outside of where it should have been....no wonder i was confused. fuck knows what they were meant to fit....  still...its all sorted now, had to pull some of my '64 project. |
