«

October 21, 2010, 08:31:12 am »
Am i right , that there are 2 differnt versions of the Gene Berg 3,5 quarter oil sumps out there , one with Gene Berg on the sides cast in and one without ? When i am right i had one with on my old motor ( which i sold to norway about 3 years ago) with the logo on the sides , the one i have now does not have that
?
Thanks..

Your engine is by the way alive and kicking. Done some mods on it. To be dynoed next week!

Hey , that sounds good ! Any pics of it ? What did you do to it ?
There were many moments where i thought , that it was a big mistake , thet i sold it , because of all the "old" quality parts in and outside the engine !!!!
Bought a 79 Olds Cutlass some time later , but never got it on the 1/4 mile... Sold it some month ago.
Now i am planning a new engine , but that will take some more time.

There are different styles, but they all said Gene Berg on them as far as I know...

The Gene Berg on the sides were done after 2005, (after I left Bergs), they were machined in, and I believed stopped later on. they even did a few Black anodized with polishes fins, I have one of those, the newest ones not sure of. But I believe they all say Gene Berg on top.

Yes , the rigth word is "machined in" ! That was the way it looked like. The one i have now does not have that , but Gene Berg cast in on top.
Thanks..

No problem, either way, the sumps themselves are all good, beats the Empi repo's, there cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

I'm getting frustrated by this sump BS. Some machine guy must have the ID's/OD's and ideas etc. and just weld a box for whatever ltrs/qrts we want. (o-ringed and all, T1 and T4). Why hang another bunch of cast kilo's under our street/race cars ? It's just a reinforced box with whatever we want on oil capacity. A welded sheet aluminun sump/box would probably suffer less from cracking IF a steet/race-car bottoms out then a cast one. Wish i could Tig, and Machine...

I hear through the grape vine that Berg may come out with an O-ring version, will have to wait and see. That would be cool, no leaks!

Ted, but you have to agree that it's just a reinforced box holding oil. Some machine guy out here could make us all happy, instead of waiting for another 2 kilo's of Taiwan cast.... Hook that custom-made-baby up with M7 bolts and everything would be good.

A fabricated box wouldn't withstand the weight of a turn key motor like a Berg sump will while installing the motor and it would probably cost twice what a cast sump would.

I agree with both of you, but if it can be done for the V8 guy's, it can be done for us VW guy's, true, won't be as strong, but maybe something can be done. Just takes the right engineering.

The v8 boys don't store their big bucks engines sitting on the oil sump.

We have aftermarket engine cases, how come none offer more oil capacity? 5 quarts would be plently, and you would have better clearance than with a bolt on sump.

For me it was more a comment about how we manhandle our engines... I would love to have a sheetmetal sump. I would just make a jack cradle to place on the outside when lowering it.

Oh ! You did not tell me that the engine was not intended for getting my car down the strip that fast
