First of all, a BIG congratulations to the Schley brothers!!
And a big thank you to Diego Febles, can you imagine a better care taker for a racer? I mean having owned this car for so so many years and not changing more than this?
Any normal "racer" would upgrade with no thoughts concerning history... going turbo or worse...
Congratulations again.... first back in the ten's?  Smiley Grin

What an excellent thread and read, I'm going to have to get my hands on a copy of the mag.

Does the 'Coop' still exist? I'm guessing not?! How about a recreation to tow it with?! That would be awesome!!!

Great work guys...

Did Diego Febles still race that car in Puerto Rico?
Or was it locked up in a garage, collecting dust?

As far as I know, the last time the Lightning Bug ran was 2003. Diego's son Tony, drove it, but I am not sure which engine was used. The Schley "Coop" was disassembled after it was sold years ago. So, if they could locate the basic truck, no telling what condition or appearance it would now have.

But I am SURE the Schleys will be looking for it shortly. These guys are ate-up on early VW drag racing!

It's nice to see the California license plate number in those Coop photos.... There is a chance it could be located by using that number (if it is still on the books)...

Talked to Paul Schley today (like that is unusual......), and we came up with a game plan that instead of getting the Lightning Bug body media blasted right away, a better idea would be to sand off the yellow paint carefully, to see exactly where all the old graphics were. Paper templates would then be made to set the exact position and size for future reference. That way, McPeak would know where and how to place the new graphics, based on the real deal, instead of guessing from old photos. Kinda like an archaeology dig, but only VW-gasser style. Man, I am all over this phase of the project, when it happens! (Can you imagine sanding to expose the real Lightning Bug's paint!)... Holy crap.

IF the container was actually picked up in San Juan and loaded into the boat, then 4-weeks, maybe. If they didn't load it last week, add another week until the next "gasser barge" leaves for Jacksonville/FL.....Costa Mesa/California. Truck will off-load it at Dee Engineering (since they have a loading dock), and then trailered over to Schley's house. My guess is sometime in December.... Party time for sure! Rick Sadler and Dominick Luppino will have front row seats. Now, that will be one hell of a Christmas present!

Well it's here, Rick, Paul and I took lots of pictures, even took pictures of Paul, Rick and I behind the wheel!

There my life is complete... Too bad I'm an idiot and still can't figure out how to post them, I'm sure Deano has a copy of them on there way to him.

A bedtime story....

Two old Volkswagen Bugs eventually die, and meet up in Heaven and while waiting to talk to St. Peter, they begin to talk about their life as a Beetle. One begins by saying he was a driver's education car and was constantly in fender benders, gears ground, and finally totalled in some parking lot mess. The other one looks over and says, he was leading a rather boring life until these two crazy guys from Costa Mesa raped me, was then beheaded, and his roof put back on lower, and then was put through a living hell on these short strips of asphalt. He was then sentences to some island in the Caribbean, which was fun, and was already to retire when those two crazy guys from Costa Mesa came back and started this crap all over again. He though, will it ever stop!!!!?

Yeah, I heard about you guys sanding the Mexican door paint off. One door was lettered underneath, "Please refer to other door."

I don't think you will find any lettering under the yellow paint, If I can remember right the name was done in gold leaf, Rick & I  was looking at the door real close and there is some real rough sanding marks about where the name was, I don't think as thick as gold leaf is that there is anything left.

Hey Dom, Russell and Deano are referring to a certain car with the initials 'IP', not 'LB'! Wink

It must be one of Russells cars, but the name EMPI is molded into the doors.
