Well, imagine you have a cool but ratty Cal Look Karmann Ghia and just for arguments sake let's say it is blue and runs high 13's. Now imagine you want to up the ante a little bit more by adding a Turbo next year, so you will crush any of the previous set Club Speed Records. And then for some very strange reason you fall in love with a Bay. Are you too far off the beaten path so even a few good smacks of the Bible as written by Keith won't set you straight? Or maybe, just maybe, can said Bay ever be considered a Looker, and even more, be considered a full, valid member of a Cal Look line-up?

Can you all post up some pictures of serious contenders! I'll start the series of, although it is more of a race car than a Looker.

the busses that are posted in this thread are very cool and can, in my opinion, be considered cal-look.

however, for some reason, i always find it strange to see a bus on fuchs or brm wheels..

Stylistically, I think buses can retain 'Cal Look' appeal... but as for performance, I wonder how stable they can realistically be with enough power behind them?  I feel very prone riding around even in a relatively stock or mild bus, but I would be terrified to ride around one with significant horsepower...but then I'm a coward.Grin

Wimp  Tongue I can understand that you feel a little more vulnerable as there is NO bonnet in front of you to give you a false sense of safety. But you can always cage a bus as you can with a Bug. (pics below of the Cool Flo 56 Panel). I've run mid 16's with my 1776cc and (on private roads only) sat at 100mph quite comfortably, Been a passenger in the green Panel above which a fair few years ago ran mid 13's with a 2332cc engine. I think just like with bugs it's all in the set up and parts used. Obviously Stock brakes are a NO NO, but uprated vented disc brakes seem to do the job quite nicely. Buses are really stable and great fun to drive when set up properly! I'd argue they are much more stable than beetle's at Speed due to the weight and extra wheel base!  Grin I can't wait for next year I'll be running my new 2276cc engine which is currently being built. Roll on the low 15's maybe 14's  Grin

Lol, very nice work, first of all!  Bus looks great.  Second of all, I was being partially facetious  in my response, as I'm a big fan of Jason Lang's 13-second bus that regularly hits up Sacramento Bug O Rama. You are right about that false sense of security in a Bug, I won't deny that...  Grin

There was a "cal-trans orange", bay window panel with BRMs featured in VWTrends years ago. It was pretty sweet.

Most of the Type 2s that I've seen hardly seem Cal Look to me. There's a very small handful of 'em that have caught my attention:

Sean Lucero (D.K.K.) had a gorgeous royal blue late model ('74-'77) panel w/911 alloys and engine. SUPER fast and lowered just right.

Paul Mayeda (D.K.K.) had a very clean '71 that was Ruby Red or something like it. All stock, sat perfect, and had BRMs. Single FourTuned quiet pack. HUGE sunroof in the back. I always enjoyed sitting in the back of that thing, cruising w/the top open.

Mark Ito (D.K.K.) had a cool lookin' root beer brown & white '67 with 911 alloys. I forget which engine he had, but it wasn't stock. We went to Bug-O-Rama in 1981 with our cars.

John Blesgraaf's super sanitary white '69 was featured in Volks World, October of 2007. Other than the rear end sitting too low, it's perfect. Un-polished 911 alloy wheels look SO right at home on that vehicle. Just a bigger engine, and it would be a blast to drive.

Now look what you have done Fabian, you went and posted some really old pics that may be offensive......  Hah!  Lyle Schaffer, absolutely one of the funnest people ever showing his third leg (almost).
That other pic with me (I was skinny) and the others on the roof and Hicken at the keg in Lyles bus, and then hippy Meredith with the porn 'stache'.... beautiful.  Absolutely beautiful.  You can kinda see Luceros bus on the far right with his hot blonde gfriend in the back.

Oh yeah, as Fred/Mark said Sean Lucero's Bay window had the 911 6 motor in it and she pulled strong.  It was a bit of work to get it all to fit but it hummed.  The guy never seemed to jump on it tho.  It had blue shag carpeting and a small fridge in it, ALWAYS fully stocked (not for long) and I also remember some surf art airbrushed on the inside door panel.  All orangy and 70's looking, like that era's T-shirt art.  Anyways, Fabian stop posting porn!

And yes I believe a Bay window CAN be Cal Look
