Way off topic but the Old Man of BMX (Scot Breithaupt) is putting together a very LARGE gathering of people, BMX bikes, parts, stuff dating back to the beginning of BMX (bicycle moto cross). It will be very interesting to anybody who jumped or raced bicycles. It will be this Sunday 11-14-2010 at Bellflower BMX AKA Hollywood Sports Park in Bellflower Ca. Should be fun day. I raced BMX as a kid back in the late seventies and now my kids are at it too, it is a great sport.

I had a little BMX in my past too... it would be great to see all the old stuff.

Hey Glenn... what was the name of that BMX shop that used to be on (I think) Orange-Olive? I remember buying a square tubing frame there... I wanna say Powerstroke? It was my 1st non-Schwinn frame.

The shop was called Peddlepower, me and Bill both worked there and we made Powerlite frames in the back.

Square tube bike would have been a "stroker", not a powerlite

I raced a little... had a Supergoose that I converted over to a Team 'Goose. Also had a first generation short wheelbase standard Mongoose. I have a pic of the nickel plated Super in front of my '66 Cal Looker, somewhere. Sold that bike for $400 back in '81 or '82. Sandblasted first generation Motomags with polished outer lips (just like my EMPI wheels) and a set of racing alloy wheels went with the sale. Wish I still had that stuff... I can't stand riding the modern day frames. The wheelbase seems all off and the forward portion of the bikes from the seat mast to the front are way too long (meaning: the top & down tubes).

My girlfriend's brother manages the Whittier Narrows b.m.x. track. I rode it a couple of years ago on her brother's 24" S.E. WAY better geometry than the new bikes, in my fossil opinion. I still have a set of prototype S.E. bars (only two sets were every made, Scott B. told me). Those bars are still on my mini 16" Schwinn Sting Ray that I built in 1982. Made the bike to fit in my orange '66 for when I went to VW events so I could ride around in the pits at the races, too. Still ride that bike. Even has an Al Martinez Body & Paint sticker on the bottom bracket.

I've always had a decent collection of bikes since I was ten. Was also Schwinn trained and worked at two local Schwinn dealers in the late '70s up until 1980, before getting into the VW/Porsche+Audi parts and service industry.

Sounds cool. I rode for Ralphs Bicycles from '82 till about '86 first on support team then U.S.A. team fun times.  Then I got into RC cars.

I too raced BMX back in the late 80s, early 90s. I had a 20" Boss USA team model that I had bought from my cousins boyfriend, the late Dave Vanderspek.  http://www.mauricemeyer.com/curb_dogs/

Haven't heard THAT name in years. Used to love going to Ralph's Bicycles. I'm guessing that you grew up in Downey, yes?

 Grin

Sadly, Ralph passed away about six years ago.
