In Arizona you run filters or your motor ends up growing in size from the dirt boring out your cylinders...that is if it runs long enough that the bearings don't go away too.  :-)  I will be running mesh around town and I am making some like Art (ACE) makes for road trips.

I know. I'd run them too if I lived where he does.

Zach,

You have about 30+ years to catch up with all the road miles some of us have in our cars. You don't see too many guys on the HOT ROD Power tours or other main road events without air cleaners.  A friday night jaunt or weekend cruise is not the same as a lot of driving.

I had motors without air cleaners once. Never ran without them again.  I lived in a fully paved Califorinia suburb at the time in the early 70's.  Everyone can do what they want.  The amount of time, work and maintenance people put in is up to them. I like longevity and protecting my investment.

I run Ram Air socks over the IDA velocity stacks.  Runs great, but if you take them of regulary (like I do to run without), the rubbers sometimes brake.  Though it's better for my engine then running without if we drive a long trip!

Succes.

Right now I'm not running any filters on my IDA's but I want to get the Berg velocity stacks that are made to fit a specific K&N filter.  Pricey though.

What is BERG asking for those?  I did not realize they had some like that.  I will have to check them out. My short manifolds and eyebrow decklid now give me the room for a set of them.

Wouldn't hurt to ask..when I worked there with Andy, we didn't make any of those, just the regular stacks, tall and short for their carb's and the standard 48IDA's . But I did see those there and was very impressive. This was 5 years ago.

I saw the ad and picture on the Samba.  The ad was placed om Nov. 23rd 2010 so I think it's current.  I haven't called and talked to the Bergs about thhese as I'm not ready to buy them (don't have the money right now). IMO, To me these look like the best filters out there if you want to run filters on your IDA's. Expen$ive though. The link below should help.

I have now installed the engine, to see how much space I got. I doesnīt look good..

I canīt use the K&N filters, they are to wide, and maybe to high too.

The Berg filters lookīs great, but they are also expensive. So I am thinking about making something like that, but where I am using my own stacks.

Thanks too all of you, who have replied to this thread.

If you can fabricate/modify your own stacks no problem then ! Dig into K&N's motorcycle page and you will find filter-dimensions to suit your needs.

Yes I think I will buy some filter elements and then fabricate my own top and bottom.

The problem is that I donīt have space for the ramflo's. So I think I will use my pro-stacks and a panel-filter. Then I will make my own air-filter-box. I think that will be a better solution, than use an oval-filter. I want the filter-area as big as possible, and with the air-direction as straight as possible in to the carb.

An alternative could be to use the mesh filters, but I am afraid they donīt clean the air well enough.

I ran the mesh style filters on my motor while it was a daily driver. No noticable difference running 2054, mild heads, 120 cam and 40 vents. What you cant see is that there is actually 3 or 4 layers of mesh. The layer in the middle is much finer than the outer layers, creating a very acceptible filtering effect, and they are simple to remove and service. I'd still have them on if Sadler hadn't given us those ultra cool DKP covers!!  Grin Grin
