Grin now its time for winterrally, minus 15 c and  lot of snow, so the roads are ready... Today we tested rally VW:s at our motorsportclubs specialstage. There was one historicrally red 1302 and my historicrally Ghia coupe + one orange 1302 F-class (free class). 1302 red is with IDA:s etc, so basic winnercar and worked nice with gasolineheater on... Ghia was little colder because new gasolineheater is still in factorybox waiting for to be bolted on...This was rally-Ghias first testrun and it worked very well, i wondered which  is better with Konis or Bilstein, but it seemed to work very nice with Konis, so they are my choise for the first rally in january.

F-class 1302 worked also nice and test was interesting, because now the new gearbox is in use, 5-speed rallybox!  Includes parts from GB-5kit, but all modifying is  made in Finland with all Finnish racegears, 1-4 with dogringsystem + added 5:th with syncro. This was because we found that in big rallies the roads are so fast,  so to be on the top -we need more maxspeed. Tomorrow we have my new 1.6 F-class engine ready for bolt-on also, so in near days after christmas we know how fast a 5-speed rally evo 1302 can be...

Merry christmas to all racers and racefans!!!

Cool deal, Jussi! I'm looking forward to your next test/race report (as well as pics of the Ghia).

I couldn't find any photos of the Ghia at http://www.historicralli.net, but did find some good action shots of other VWs and Porsches

First winter-rally driven today!  Classic VW-racing class had only aircooled rally VW:s.
I was racing there first time as a driver with my Ghia Coupe. All went ok, 1303 was fastest, then was two 1302 and next Ghia + type 3:s after my Ghia.

Next race will be in this weeks saturday...

Saturdays real rally was interesting. We started ok, but at the middle of the first specialstage  the gearboxes hockeystick jumped between the forks so we continued the rest of the 1.st and total 2.nd specialstage with only the 2nd gear on... Luckily i got the gear off at the serviceplace by pushing it with the screwdriver via the oilfillinghole.  Then we continued the race 3 specialstages more and we had some close situations as all others i believe. The roads were narrow and the drivingline was very narrow also. If you you loose the grip and jump on the soft snow then it was just luck to continue on the road....

Otherwise Ghia worked 100% and runned nice. No problem with the oiltemperature etc. -longest specialstage  was 15km. New gasolineheater was more than nice... We finished as 3rd in our historic H10 class!  Ghias power and  gearbox and suspension seems to fit very nice for rally, so the only thing to get better results is to have a perfect race + push it harder. With this only two small races rallydrivingexperience these results are good.

Now it needs only washing/cleaning and small service to be race-ready for next challenges!

Photos/videos youtube + somewhere in the net :Mäntsälä ralli 8.1.2011   Ghias number was 40

In that place we needed some help because the 2.nd gear was on... That blue beetle mr Bärlund was fast, but he finished the race at the 4th specialstage by driving out of the way far away into snow...  I have std red KONIs in Ghia, Kimmos 1302 has orange KONIs, but Juhani and most of the beetles drive with BILSTEINs.

Some more pictures etc from the CLASSIC VW-RACING you can find at www.golf17rally.com   and take aircooled VW from left side

Would be nice to join an asfalt-rally with Ghia also...   Wink
The summerseason is so short in Finland, so we have to find some more racing-ideas for winter also...
Circuitrace is ok for spring and auctum, dragrace for summer, rally for winter.  This is only the question of the choises...

The other big question: which is funniest? That is not easy to choose, but the most important is to have fun with aircooled VW:s  Grin

I volunteer to be the official Kuplapaja rally photo/videoographer. I'll work for free - just need a little food, drink, and a warm sauna to bring me back up to normal operating temps after being outside for a while... Grin

Please keep the reports, pics, and video coming Jussi - it's good stuff!

I've just received it. Nice article and quite different from a standard feature with motionless pictures and a little bit of more or less interesting history of a car.

One thing that I noticed is that on a first picture (but not on the other ones) your rear wheels seem to "tuck in" quite a lot. Is it a problem in practice? Do you try to prevent it, or did you learn to live with it?

Yes, there was in Peurunka orange Juhani Laaksonens 1302 and Robert Bärlunds metsilver 1303, Juhani finished 4th after small problems, Robert stopped after 2 specialstages -continued to bar...hah-hah.

Ghia works ok, rearsuspensions moving is not limited, it is different to drive than IRS, but Ghia is FIA-classified only with SWING.
It is little like driving in wawes in long little jumping straights. Normally i brake little before jumps and avoid to lift the wheels very much, then it is better to handle and faster by keeping the traction. Otherwise it is very fun to drive and runs high rpm.
I have planned to test my 2.7 type 4 in Ghia also, but between the trees 1.6 type1 seems to be enough -for a while Grin
