I'm currently rebuilding a 010 and I think it has the wrong cap. does anybody know the color code of the brown cap (if there is a color code)? or is this cap still easily available?

i think that 010 base was not black in origin. i think that just all painted it black  by themselves. 010 i restored (one on the left) was in a good shape before i painted....and it seemed not to be painted at all. maybe only a simil-transparent coat, very light. no sign of black paint. so i tried to make a bronze coluor as u put yellowiish transparent on the nude iron. in other words i tried to do the same effect that i saw when i bought it from "the boss".
i bought the new cap at a bosch warehouse but was the new  type more near to sealing wax red than to brown...so i had to paint.

anyway, there is no code for bachelite....it wasn't painted....but moulded in final colour.

every part i paint people ask me code!!!!!! Shocked Undecided Undecided   in except for body vw coulour or wheels.....i simply never look at codes....i use fantasy...but most of all i use my eyes.....i take the original part in my hand and go to paint shop (great one). there are always same colours on their lists.( with example of colour) in that case of cap of 010 there is no right code at all!!!!!!!

simply becuse first of all bachelite colour is not omogeneus but striated....and then because every series of cap had different colours...

so in conclusion cap of same era could be little more darker or lighter.

anyway....the base i used is a chestnut brown (not vw one) with a little black added.

it is not dark as tidi's one (on the right) but it is near to old part i had before. and i like it.

mine is unrestored and is also black. it was never painted and has scratches. it doesn't look to be repainted at any time because the paint is very thin and only one layer shows up when you scratch it. my cap is a liltlle lighter, but i have seen darker ones before. so yes that has to do with the molding of the backelite...

Ive got 3 Grin Glenn rebuilt/restored the first one for me, it looks perfect! The second I rebuilt myself, kept the original paint, and installed it on my GTV. The 3rd I picked up a month ago for $10, its an original bus 010 with the 211 part number. Ive got NOS brown caps for all of them Grin

seem to me that mine is different from yours: look at code plate: mine is fixed by two rivets with central hole and plate is different: yours is printed, mine have 3 dimensions numbers.
that's why i insist on my thesis that not all 010 was black.  anyone who knows more??

My Glenn Ring rebuilt 010. Guess I will have to hunt up a brown cap though.
