Well again as the title says guys I have been thinking about running a smaller 356 dyno on my next type1 engine - I have seen it done a couple of time now namely on Pete's 1795cc Raptor motor (anyone got any pic's?) So I am wondering whats involved What parts do I need Which dyno stand which pulley's which fan/backing plate etc Any help would be awesome guys

It was a Bosch # GR26x. A 12v generator, thats the same size as a 6v VW generator. Just get a 6V generator stand, Pulley, and 6v generator tin.

The early backing plate is recessed and calls for an early narrow fan, correct? I would assume that a '66 backing plate would be flat, allow for a wider fan, and fit the 6v diameter dyno(?).
Good thinking, Lee. I've always thought that would be a great idea on a '66 and earlier car.

This would not allow the use of the later doghouse fan

Its very similar to the rattle can stuff BUT I know Ian/pete had it done by an old skool Ferrari guy - This stuff is ALOT more toxic I think I'll be asking Ian to get me a few bits done for the Roller Crank Motor Anyway back on topic - let have more info/pic's of 356 style dynamo's/Generators

So, are all 6v backing plates recessed, requiring the use of the narrow fan?

Lee,
Mine is a 25a version from a 356 mate of mine who had a spare. The backing plate is also from the same engine but the fan is a wide welded version in a CSP non dog house fanshroud. There was no drama fitting it although I may have just got lucky, but it was just a bolt on job and the fan belt lined and the fan fitted in the fanshroud a treat.
The crinkle powder coating is a really good job by a couple of really nice guys running a small firm in Farnborough North Camp, and I have no hesitation in recomending them, and it wasn't very much money either if you do all the prep and just give it to them ready to go. It seams to be hard wearing as well I've had the motor out 4 times this year trying to find a suitable clutch (3 of which were at the track) so its had a bit of a rough introduction to life in my car but its still looks in good shape. I'll dig out their number if your interested.
If you get one at it needs rebuilding or checking there is a good firm in Essex Phil West and I used to rebuild ours, again I'll dig out the number if your interested.
One other thing worth mentioning is the regulator, as I understand it can be difficult to get a regulator to suit the higher output generators. I know Lucas (55 oval OG paint and OG BRM's) has one on his and has had a problem with his regulator but Ian has something sorted now, but I'm not sure what or where from so you are best off speaking to him if you end up with one with a higher out put than the VW regulator. Just for the record the height out put generators are heavier than the 25A ones.

I kept meaning to take some pictures of the engine, but I needn't of worried.

Cool Thanks for dropping in Pete I was hoping there was a "simple" solution - I had kinda worked out it was the 25a one you need, I had also read about the regulator issues - I am gonna be using a Magneto so I am sure I will be fine with the 25a unit Better start looking/saving
