Hello all

we're setting our race car on a new case and crank (probably wbx case or aftermarket alu) and was thinking about the crank, will a bugpack flanged crank be good for our race engine? it will be in the region of 78-82mm on chevy journals, power in the region of 500Hp for drag racing, can you rely on this crank for this application? we do max 20-25 passes per season, and then we check it again

Also this 6pin and 6bolt design of the bugpack is smaller in diameter than the newer 8bolt of scat's? as it will be easier if we go with the wbx case, thanks for your time

Hi,

I think the Bugpack cranks are very good quality for the money (always been pleased with my Bugpack cranks using them since the 90') and at least there is some control on their cranks they're selling.
One question for you Dimitri; I noticed you're trying to sell 2 SCAT flanged -cranks since a while...did you got bad experience in one or the other way you want to share with us ? Maybe there's a reason you are changing to another brand of crank?

no please it's a missunderstanding, I sell those cranks because don't have what to do with them, I have already one in my street engine, I just need for the race engine a smaller one 78-82mm because I want the case to be as intact as possible without removing material from it, also I'm afraid of the "little coverage" between the main and rod journals, especialy on a big 86mm with a chevvy rod. Also I have the impression that bugpacks are at least "fair" for their price as you mentioned, and this is why I'm asking, if anyone has personal experiences of those ones, cheers

I use the BUGPACK Flange Crank in my car, Turbo & Nitrous making over 500hp, I know The Red Baron used one also.

 I have used two Bugpack flanged cranks and both worked well with no problems, would use them again. Another good crank is made by REVMASTER, that is what I am using now with BMW center main,     Mike

thanks a lot for your inputs, it's exactly what I thought of initialy about those cranks, do we have posibility for all T4 mains on those or they come with T4 center main only? I'm trying to access the bugpack site and won't go through, cheers

The BUGPACK Site has been hacked numerous times and is in the rebuild process. All current (past 10 years) flanged cranks have all type-IV main journals and chevy rod journals.

Does Bugpack have main bearings for these cranks,(all type 4 mains),
and flywheels.

The only bearings we carry are the conversion (BMW) bearings that allow the use of a standard type-I align bore case. T use these bearing on the number 1, 2 , and 3 mains you will need to to do the center thrust set-up like Jack at Jay Cee Ent does 714-444-4344 (www.jaycee-ent.com). As for dealers on line Vee Dub Parts Unlimited 714-848-8868 (www.vwparts.net) can assist you or you can call BUGPACK at 714-979-4990 for a dealer near you.

thanks for the info, we will be using a wbx case the later one with the tangs on the bearings instead of dowel pins and the seperate thrust bearing at the flange side, we need also the center main modiification or we can retain the existing thrust surface of the flange bearing? In this case at what size has the case to be linobored -T4 std or other? thanks in advance

Remember that the wbx case has a 1 mm smaller thrust bearing . so you must weld the case or use the center thrust conversion.
My crank 84mm works fine so far :-)

I think i found a good solution . Modified original bmw bearing. I try it out this year on my engine first

I don't think we ever had 78mm in a flanged version. As for now, we do not.

I'm making jigs to use a bearing bronze thrust washers in the rear as factory. The bearings will be the correct OD and ID for the flange crank With plenty of chamfer and oil dimples. They will fit in either type 1 or 4 journals and for the 4" seal. Only as my jig will be made for this. I'm getting close, but sorry not in Europe. Machining will be done through Brothers VW.
