I was thinking about this post when I left for work today. I saw a cal look late model, a nice resto Oval, and a mid sixties ghia all in my short 8 mile trip to work. I have not noticed that many nice old vws in one day in a long time. Oh yeah and my 66 is a daily driver. Like Frenchy my truck sits in the driveway.

I'm hoping my new motor will get me 30mpg (the old tired one would get 22-23 around town and 27-28 on the highway). My Tundra averages around 18. But I'll still drive it when it's 100+ degrees out!

I'll be driving mine more once I get the 2017 build finished... But I suspect with 42x37.5mm valves and dual 45 Dells mileage won't be the motivator... |

Zach I am to lazy sometime to spend the extra cash for fuel for the dually or the Tundra so I drive the 64 even in the summer regardless of heat just pry open the vent windows for more cooler air LOL LOL!!!!!! Frenchy |

With 10:1 CR, I have to run Premium fuel which is $1.16/litre in my part of Canada. A few years ago we were paying $0.58/litre and we even produce the fuel right in our province!!

1 liter =0.26 gallon
here're the price in my county:
Eurosuper 95 :1,5910 € /L =2.20 USD/L in $/gallon it's 8.34USD/gallon
Eurosuper 98 :1,6150 € /L =2.23 uSD/L in $/gallon it's 8.42USD/gallon

So what your saying is you can get 95 or 98 octane right out of the pump? Over here the best we get is 91. If you want any better you have to sign your life away stating that you won't use the fuel outside of a competition vehicle and its about 8 dollars a gallon for 98 octane.

Different ratings account for some of that.
Generally the octane rating on the European std for Octane will be 4-5 points higher than the same fuel rated by US stds. So 95 Octane for Europe would be 90 or 91 in the US. |

That's funny. You can drive a 6 sec car (1/4 mile) on the streets but risk getting jailed for running a high octane, unleaded fuel. |

Jail may be an exaggeration but my buddy did get his car impounded for 30 days and sent to a smog ref for running race gas on a mild nitrous motor. Good times |

We do not get 95 or 98 octane (US) right out of the pump here in Europe. As Zack Gomulka says, the octan ratings for US and Europe is totally different. Here is an approximate comparison: Low octane 91 RON in Europe = 86-87 AKI in US Regular 95 RON in Europe = 91 AKI in US Super unleaded 97-98 RON in Europe = 93-94 AKI in US V-power 100 RON= 95 AKI in US If you want higher octane, I guess the next step would be aviation fuel or racing fuel. And that would probably get you "jailed" in both Europe and US. I am guessing it is illegal in street cars both the US and Europe because of not meeting emission standards, it can contain lead additives, there's no road tax (obviously ) on aviation fuel, safety reasons etc |
