Importing a car from the US to the UK

I'm just looking for some info at the moment, not for right now but in a year or two, what would be the involvement of buying a car from California and importing it back to the UK.
Does anyone have any information on costs and time scales and any other import duties, also what is involved in registration in the UK after delivery.
Any information would be great.
Thanks

Hi Dale
I use Kingtown Shipping , if you can get the seller of the car to deliver it to the shippers in LA that will save some £.
The last car I shipped in January this year cost $1650 , so about £1150 .
Then there are a few unloading/ clearing costs over here , about £100 .
Then import tax , this is 10% + VAT at 20% . But if the car is pre 1950 , or of european manufacture you only pay 5% tax and NO VAT !
Finally to register , get the car MOT'd on the chassis number . Insure it . Download a V55/5 form from the DVLA website .Then take the title , mot, tax forms , insurance certificate , V55/5 and any other documentation to your local DVLA office , pay £40 .
A few days later you get a letter telling you your reg number , and after a few weeks a V5 .
There is a chance the DVLA will want to inspect the car , unless it is massively modded , this is just to check the chassis number .
Hope thishelps , Rob

If you want to pay to much thesamba.com -- -- If you looking for a okay-dokey car there is craigslist.org -- you will want to hit the inland empire, Los Angeles, Organe county and possibly San Diego sections of craiglists -- You'll never know what will turn up
