Engine Compartments-Painted, Trunk Paint, etc.....

Ok guys, looking to redo my engine compartment when I pull my motor to install another motor. Want to pull the old tar board out and clean up the firewall. can't really afford to re-paint the fire wall to the car right now, so was thinking of rattle can spraying it with some kind of paint. I am into detail. Going to install my Fast-Fab Breather that has been wrinkle painted black for a cleaner look. My shroud will my black think shroud. I ran this across a good friend of mine and have a good idea on what I'm going to do. But like to put the trunk spray. But what are you guys doing besides color match to the car? Lets see some pic's of your firewall's, with or without engines, kinda get an idea which way I will go. Thanks guy's!

What about trying some to get a near match on the Duplicolor paint? I've used those 'jar'w/aerosol type sprayers in a pinch to get decent results
Then again, on my '67, I took out the tar board and was able to clean the adhesive off for factory paint underneath ... just took time!
I'd try that first!

Actually, what Tom suggested doesn't cost much and it's very easy to do. Buy one of those glass jar aerosol kits, go get something like your gas door color matched (or anything that you can remove from the car) at an automotive paint supply shop. Then, follow the instructions and mix the paint, reducer, and hardener accordingly. Perfect match and you don't have to pay big bucks to a body shop.

When I bought my '67, the previous owner only had paint on the inner decklid and apron. The rest of the engine bay was a few different colors. So I took care of it with the above method and it has a more finished look, now.

Or, just spay it satin black if you're not into the Zolatone or tar paper look.

   Drawing a blank right now but the auto paint shop on Downey ave in Downey will fill aerosol spray paint cans of their custom color matches.  I will post when I remember the damn name.

Take the time,..pull the extra steel spikes off and undercoat(prime/seal) and detail it up with paint that is as close to the exterior as possible

Don't use zolotone it is water based and can be a mess.  If you use it it needs to be clear coated.  Go to a local paint store with the paint code and buy a pint of paint that is the car color and have them put it in rattle cans.  I cut off the pointed tabs that hold the tar board and ground them down them rattle can painted my engine compartment.  I think it looks better that way.  It isn't cheap, but it is still under $40 and I got about 3-4 cans of spray paint.

Yup! Whatever I do will definitely will take those pointed tabs OFF! Don't plan on putting back the tar board. Thanks Mark, didn't know they had kits like that, Jason, that looks like something that would work for me. Thank you much, and thanks you guy's for your input and info. Yup Tom, no excuses for sure, good prep, masking, and rattle can away. LOL. Motor is almost done, fitted all the sheet metal today, just a few more things and will ready to put in, after the firewall painting.

Bob Downey paint in Whittier will match any color and put it in a spray can. There is a three can minimum order at $15 each.

you can also go to the paint store, I think there is one in buena park.  they sell spray cans of the color, just bring in a part and they will match it.  kinda expensive though, more expensive then painting with a spray gun and purchasing a pint.
Do it how you want it the first time, then you won't have to do it again just my $.02.

Bugpack sells a nice one piece bead rolled aluminum universal firewall that I have used before. Fits right in behind the engine.

Forgot another method I used on my cousins car. I didn't want the tarboard as it was in horrible condition, but there were a few repairs that I'd struggled to hide. I ended up using stonechip paint (overpaintable, not shutz!) on the engine bay, and then painting over it. The result looks like a lightly hammered finish in body colour, which you don't really notice but also hides the repairs really well.
