It's old school for a reason

« on: July 15, 2011, 10:35:23 am »

Hi Guys

I tried installing my vertex magneto last night and came up against a few headaches that have me foxed

took out my 009 and slipped in the mag and connected the plug leads 1432 and no joy, then connected the leads 180 degrees out but as indicated on the cap that I thought must be wrong and it starts on the button,

completely back to front from the 009, timing light shows that it is firing on BDC, this cant be right ??

also where is the best place to ground out the kill switch. I had a autometer tachometer signal converter wired in as per the wiring diagram but this didn't kill the mag so had to pull the leads to get the engine to stop.

BTW I really couldn't believe it would run on one cylinder with a mag but it does  Shocked

Any help would be great or could someone point me towards any good reading on the subject, did a search but seems that there is little real information out there

Thanks inadvance

If you take the caps off both the 009 and mag and point the rotor in the same direction, does the position of the slot on the bottom match or is it also 180 out of each other?  If so no biggie, might just have to remove and reinstall the drive also 180 out or change it on the mag.  Also what plug did you take the timing reading from?  No mater the position of the mag, if the motor is running, no. 1 and no. 3 will always fire on tdc and the opposite is true of no. 2 and no. 4.  Not sure if this helps    Taylor

Hi Ron,

No idea bout the kill switch, are you running any form of rev limiter?

Run a wire from the terminal on the side of the mag to the dash and fit a toggle switch, connect the mag wire to one terminal on the switch and the other to earth anywhere you like, this will stop the engine, if you hide the switch under the dash away from prying eyes it will also double as a simple anti theft device

andy's right on the wiring and flick switch. a rev limiter is not a necessity. if you f*ck up, hit the switch and the engine's off instantly.
i still need to wire in my limiter, but i do have a joe hunt signal converter, same item as autometer sell. it works nicely!

btw, does your vertex have a curve or are you gonna run locked ignition?

right

my mistake on 180 degree out timing as I must have put the timing wire on number 2 as I alway use number 1  Roll Eyes

the car is now running but no adavance curve so the mag is locked out, so what problems can I expect running it with 31-33 degrees advance, is starting the only bad side effect ?

I'm currently testing it on my 2275 8-1 compression ratio engine but it will go on my 2276 10-1  fk46 ultra wedge ports

final stupid question, can the mag be run with an alternator or a dynamo Huh?

Thanks in advance

you can only run a mag with a 356 12 volt dynamo.... not really, they really dont mind what you use, nothing at all is an option with a mag!
