There should be some numbers stamped, but you could count the teeth & divide the two!!
4.37 or 4.12 or 3.86 ? 7 ?

There should be a stamped letter and three digits on the ring gear. For example "K833" is a Klinkenberg 4.12. The trick is the digits will tell you the ratio: 33/8 = 4.125

All of the genuine VW R&Ps have 8 teeth on the pinion, so you don't need to count them.
31, 33, 35 and 37 are the 4 ring gear counts. They are 3.875, 4.125, 4.375 and 4.625 respectively.

Most of the ring gears are marked like Mike said.  There are 3 letters, G, K, and O.  This indicates the tooth profile shape.
There are some ring gears with no markings.  And a LOT of pinions without too.  If you find a gear set without markings, put a paint mark on them so they don't get mixed up.

35 teeth is a 4.37

33 teeth is a 4.12

31 teeth is a 3.88

etc.

You've got an early 4.37 from a 61-66 trans.  At that time there was only one gear ratio, so they weren't marked.
Maybe Mike will see this and tell us what tooth profile these early 6 bolt ring gears are.
