Got this EMPI oil thermostat of EBAY the other day but a bit unsure how to plumb it in?!

The ports are marked up with E1, E2, C1, and C2. Through E1 and E2 you can see a spring, and through C1 and C2 you can see a brass thingie, a round plate and the bottom of the spring. The thermostat switch is connected to port C2. The thermostat doesn’t seem to fully seal, as if I blow through ports air comes out of all, is this a problem?

If not, obviously something happens to the brass bit as the oil warms up, but what ports go to where?

I.e. which port goes to:

The external fan in
The external fan out
Engine out (via a filter)
Engine in (via a thermostat switch for the fan)

Any advice will be much appreciated.  Smiley  I’ve attached some photos below.

Stick it in a pot of water and heat it up.  See what happens.

Replying to your question regarding the fact the passage is not completely sealed, I think it is normal and correct, because you should guarantee a minimum oil flow to (and back from) the radiator. This will help you when you fill the system with the oil the first time, and will avoid sort of "pressure waves" when the thermostat opens or closes the passage.

Previous deciphering was correct:

E1: from engine to thermostat
C1: to cooler
C2: back from cooler
E2: back to engine

I've only just noticed these respnses. Smiley

However, although i'm sure the connections as suggested are right, mechanically it doesnt seen right for whats in the thermostat?  Huh

Cold and not connected C1 is completly open to E1 (see middle picture), i.e. oil will flow through. Seem to be the same for C2 and E2, with a slight opening to let the pressure out  across (last picture). I dont see how this excludes the cooler when the oil is cold?

Confused as ever?  Huh

Hi Dude,

I think it you'll find it works on oil pressure, such that;

When oil is cold, pressure is high and will close the port to cooler

When oil is hot, pressure is low and will open the port to cooler

Uninstalled, i.e. in your hand; there is no oil pressure to open/close the ports, hence it appears to be directing oil to the cooler - if that makes sense...?
