Excessive oil pressure wear the bearings out too fast. Creates a lot of drag in the engine, hence loss of power. And finally, if no external thermostatic controlled oil cooler is used, the oil does not get cooled correctly.
Eventhough it has been used widely by some builders, the Melling pump is not the answer for a type 4, nor a type 1 for that matter. (I thought we discussed that to death 10-15 years ago. But fair enough, some of you are a lot younger than I am
.) Oh well, cant change that can we
As said, the stock oil pump (if in good condition) is more than enough for most engines. High power/turbo engines can benefit from a 30 mm pump if the housing is modified to handle the extra volume. If you just plug it in a non modified housing you will gain very little.
The CB/Shadek dry sump pump is OK. It needs a little attention in the galleys though before installation.
- While dry sump lubrication is very safe unless you blow a hose, it does create some other issues like contolling oil level etc. I am not 100% for it, unless we are talking race. Other people may think different. And I am open to suggestions to overcome the before menthioned issues...
