Hey guys, I recently bought an EMPI pod mount tach and when I installed it in my bug, it fried the electronic ignition. I want to make sure I hooked it up properly. It has four wires and i hooked them up the following way : red = switched 12 volt power, black = coil negative, brown = chassis ground, white = gauge lights. I think this is right, but I'm not 100% sure.

Too fast fab  Grin
Yes , if the tach is the good tach pod model then it is the correct diagram for empi tachs from first and second generation . The wiring instruction is absolutly different than the empi tach on the last GTV

Thanks for the help, guys! Here is the tach I have. So if I'm reading this diagram right, I hook the tach to the positive terminal of the coil? And what is the relay for? I'm confused.

yes , you must remove the black wire of the N°2 terminal fuse ( this is the oirginal wire which goes to the coil ) and you put the red wire from the tach on the n°2 treminal fuse . After the black removed wire of the N°2 ternimal fuse must be attached with the black wire from the tach . Black with black and red with fuse Smiley
A friend of mine is using this tach on his 65 bug and it works very good and he doesn't have the relay Wink

Well, I hooked it up like the diagram and it worked! I've installed a lot of tachs into a lot of cars and I've never seen one that is wired liked that. I'm not sure how I would wire if I were to use an MSD box or something similar.
