Sorry, I left my copy at the house, but I recall it was a new name to the magazine, possibly a new staffer. No one I had ever heard of.

I believe that story mirrors what was or is, on their web site.

The author is Brandan Gillogly. I'm thinking that's Richard Bays on the left rear fender and Dean Lowery on the far right of the photo... can't tell who the others are.

Cool article (just bought the mag), but kinda "off" in how they combined both Lightning Bugs into one story.....but I guess close enough for Hot Rod!

That black and white photo was taken the day, Hot Rod did a group shot of the Inch Pincher 1, the Deano Dyno-Soar, Rich Bays' Giant Killer and the Lightning Bug 1. That is of course, at OCIR. BTW, the Schleys just bought every Hot Rod magazine in Orange County.

Haha, I'll bet! I always mix up the Lightning Bug 2 and Tar Babe in my head, since they both were kind of "reborn" in the same timeframe. After reading the Hot VW's article (great job by the way Deano), it seems the Lignthing Bug 2 was less altered than Tar Babe?

No, Hot Rod just did this one pager to update that the Lightning Bug II is being restored (even though they ran a photo of the Lightning Bug I).

Thanks Russell, but anything in Hot Rod about VW gassers is good for us!

I have that Hot Rod issue. The article is called "VWs take gas" and it contains all the details on each car, especially Deano Dyno Soar.
