CVs
« on: December 25, 2011, 18:44:58 pm »

Hi guys what CVs ans drive shafts are good for 500 to 600 bhp I've got 930 cv output flanges on my gear box and 944 half shafts I was planing on using this idea

At present would use 4 x 8mm bolts but I can go to 10mm and also 2 10 mm dowels

Any views on this

Cheers andy

It is quite common to have the vw or 944 stubs machined on the end and a 930 pattern disc welded on to convert them to 930 cvs, this would give you the same at both ends,I ran 944 cvs for 9 years or so on the cabrio before going to 930 after a 944 cage eventually failed, but I never had that much hp,you are talking about alot more than mine

thanks for the reply ive found these on the samba

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1092312

not sure how good they would be but they must be a better bet than welding? i still think i can get my Range raver axle idea to work any comments on that ?

thanks again andy

I would say a vw or porsche genuine part would always be better than any cheap chinese or similar made part, and the welded on flange is not going to break or come off thats for sure:-)I have heard about some problems with the empi made stubs breaking but havent seen it myself,so cant say for sure either way, though that is what I currently use.
I thought I read before you used alluminium trailing arms?I thought they used different stub axles to steel arms?nothing like type 1 stubs, and I have no experience with the Range rover parts,I pressume what you are using is from the front of the range rover,or do later ones have independent rear suspension? they look like alot of rotating weight to me,i never managed to break a stock vw bolt when using he 944 cvs,and I have never seen the bolts as the weak link, its the cv cage that breaks or the axle itself

hi

i was going to use porsche arms but i changed the brakes to gears brakes so ive used narrowed T1 irs, the RR axles are the rear props shortend the weight is less than a 944 axle with CVs. the stubs do seam to be too cheap i will have to see if theres some good ones about

Those stub axles look identical to mine. The thread size for the bolts is probably 3/8" UNF and is well up to the task even though they are 0.5mm or so thinner in diameter compared to M10. If you buy them, purchase your 12.9 grade bolts in the US also as they will be a fraction of the cos compared to the UK. Come to think of it, my stubs may have come via Richie so he's your man if you need some   Wink Matt
