Yesterday this decal was at £32. It has soared to £310 in a day. Insane!

Being there prior to DKP I and from day (1) I feel I'm qualified to offer some comments. This is NOT a first generation decal as they were almost black in color and the printing and logo was much sharper. How do I know this?, because I still have some "originals" and don't ask because they are not for sale at any price.
Later batches that were produced during the original DKP I era were much more blue and the lettering and logo were almost fuzzy compared to the originals. The pricing is getting in purportion with real BRMs and it is ridiculous. With the technology that exist today one can duplicate almost anything so why would you pay an outrageous figure like this?
I guess way back then we really created something in our little VW club that none of us ever dreamed would occur. You can buy the item, but you can't buy the "history". Enough said.

I had one of those, sold it for £50! £320 seems a little steep, you are only paying for the printing on the back!!!

Well, whoever buys it (and he says he has two to sell...) can't buy his way into the club, either... Or the friendship and camaraderie that goes with membership. That is priceless.

The fact someone is willing to sell it on eBay is sad... The fact someone is willing to buy it (and for a ludicrous amount) says it all really.
The world will always have peddlers and suckers!
But $475 for ONE decal. I can't believe it is happening...

I think someone might have thrown in a huge 'spoiler' bid which will just keep upping the price regardless of what anyone else bids, and then back out at the end... Just a thought.

I collect DDS stuff, but I try to look for "deals" and not pay the crazy prices for things.
This kind of money for a sticker for a club you don't even belong to is a little nutty to me.
That being said, I love the DKP. John L, did you happen to keep the original receipt for the first batch of DKP stickers' order, I would like to buy that from you and then resell it on Ebay to some dude from Europe.

So I am trying to understand the logic of paying hundreds of Dollars for these stickers. So, once you get them, do you stash them away in a drawer for your "collection"? Or, do you attach them to your VW's side windows, in hopes that others will be impressed that you/your car are somehow are connected with the DKP? Nowadays, it would easy enough to trace a car back to an actual club member.

Sorry, can't help you with that receipt and even if I had it I'd keep it just because it means something to me. Guess it goes back to the saying "Priceless" and that is what it would be to me.
Some years ago Jim Edmiston called me and asked if I had any and I said sure, how many do you want? I did this only because Jim was my longtime friend, still active in the club and "we had a history" plus the fact I knew he would do the right thing with them.
The DKP (original) decals on my '63 have been there almost from day one of my ownership of over 30 years. I did that because I felt I had a history with the club and it meant something to me. When I came back into the DKP fold I had concerns that some of the current members would say something to me about them. I was fully prepaired to say "I've earned these and they are not DKP III". I'm pleased to say that has never occurred and I'll be the first guy to say my '63 isn't what "Cal-look cars" of today look like. But with that stated I will say in no uncertain terms the car does represent the way we did it in the beginning and I'm proud of that.
Recently I had a conversation with a friend in the east who made a comment about joining DKP so he could run the decals. I immediately told him it doesn't work that way. Read the qualifiers the club post on their web site.
If people are stupid, yes stupid enough to pay big $$ for something like this maybe some of us old timers should start signing autographed photos of ourselves. I could always use the extra income.........

Interesting. At least the seller talks about the club being "elite" and then says he will not end the auction early BUT will consider serious offers. What doesn't make any sense to me is the larger example shown. In my times the larger NEVER existed, so where did this come from?? Maybe it is another knock off from China..........................

Totally agree with you John. I have some original DKK stickers and I guard them carefully. I've passed on a selected few to club members and a few select individuals who I know will treasure them for what they are and not flip them to make a few bucks.
We have had some stickers made a few years ago that are very close to the originals and that's what most people are running on their cars now.
My '67 however has had the same sticker in the window since 1982

I bought some bug-in plaques from him #1-9 completely nos, about 5 years ago maybe slightly longer, they were genuine. He doesn't' show the back of them so difficult to tell if they are original, but I don't think he sells knockoff stuff.

Am I the only one who see's that sticker for what it is? It's a collectors item, just like all the DDS, Empi, and Berg stuff that people pay outrageous prices for. It will probably never be put on a 1/4 window, just stored away and shown to friends. It's the sellers sticker and they can sell to whoever they want for however much they want, period. If it is an original, someone from DKP1 obviously didn't think it would matter if they were given or sold away back then, why all the uproar now?

Speaking only for myself, I'd agree with Randy... as a collectible. I'd have no problem selling a DRA decal or badge, but with some restrictions. I think out of courtesy to the club and it current or past members the decal should not be used on a car. That's pretty hard to inforce but I think most collectors would keep them in non used, safe location. Especially with some if the prices they might need to pay.

Dean, as previously stated I've never seen these. Now I can ONLY speak for my active years with DKP I and I guess it is possible that sometime after that they were created but until last night when I saw this I never knew of such. I don't think Roger Grago or Mike Dumpy chime in here but possibly they could comment if these were done during their times. Below is my previous post on the larger decal:

i agree....who cares?....
rare collectable/vintage/historic stuff attracts a premium....where's the news in that???....all this discussion about some old stickers, just because they're DKP is ' holier than thou ' nonsense written by people that probably would have jumped at the chance to buy them 10 years ago before they knew about this forum and realised that amongst those in the know it is frowned upon to own such items unless in the club
....original Barris kustom plaques are worth a fucking fortune....no-one EVER has any discussions about whether the ownership of these items assumes any genuine Barris provenance......its just a given that they are interesting/historic pieces.
oh, and by the way...its not me selling them.....although the $$ would be nice....
