What would you use and why?

Had a 42mm lying around but it was suggested that a 36 would be better.

Berg 36mm forged.

Plenty strong and you can use a torque multiplier to torque it to spec.

I tested the Scat gland nut just to see what will give up first. Measured the length then torqed to 1000nm - 740lbs. Measured it again, no stretch or any sign of damages. The German crank was also ok. Torqed it again to 1500nm - 1100lbs and again no damages. I gave up but next time I will continue to torque until something give up. It is amazingly easy when you use the torque meister.

JC has used a forged 36mm on my crank, so try him or you can have the 42mm.
