I bought an engine with low miles (800) a while back. I am just now getting it started after a cam, compression and rocker arm change. I have ran the engine on my test stand for a few minutes and when I went to adjust the valves I noticed that there was NO oil in the heads. The pushrods are full but the oil has not gone past the adjuster screw. Is it that the oil just didn't get warm enough and thin out? Shell rotella 15w40. I an using what appears to be a run of the mill set of 1.4 rockers. Any ideas what I should look at?

I bought a set of Bugpack HD aluminium pushrods that weren't drilled all the way through on HALF of the tips! Something to check...

Rockers or the adjuster screws would be what I'd double check. Weird...

Make sure the oil holes in the rocker adjusting screws go all the way through.

I tool the rockers apart and can blow air thru the adjuster and it comes out the little hole in the rocker shaft area. Then I put the rocker back on the shaft. When I put it up to my mouth and blow ( hey no funny comments!) I cannot get air to pass thru. I know you cannot build up much if any psi this was but thought I would try it. I guess I will give a try to loose adjustment, but I know the oil is getting to the pushrods, they are full.

Now doesn't the pushrods get their oil from the lifters? And are you sure the lifters are getting oil? I think you need to check up-stream with your problem.

I'd try using an oil squirt can on each adjuster screw oil hole (leave the rocker arm assemblies together) to pump some oil into the shafts.

But the pushrods are full of oil. Maybe I am ignoring upstream since they have oil.

The adjusters should have an oil groove part way up the threads... maybe the screws are adjusted too far out or too far in to match the oil port on the rocker.

I recall when using Scat 1.4:1 rockers, there was a sweet spot for the position of the adjusting screw. You had to basically line up the oil slot in the screw, to the rocker arm hole, and then lock-down the jam nut and adjust everything else to suit (pushrod length, etc). So, I believe Sarge has got it right.l

It appears that the problem is gone. Today I adjusted the valves WAY loose ( thanks Richie ) and ran the engine with no covers. After about 20 seconds there was oil coming out between the pushrods and the adjuster cup. Next I adjusted the valves back to 0 lash and ran it again. Oil did start to splash around and seems to be going where it was supposed to. Then I took off a rocker just to see if oil was making its way up to the shaft, and it was.
Last time the head was DRY, nothing on the inside of the valve cover and nothing under the pushrods after 3-4 minutes of running. This time I basically took it apart and put it back together. I'm probably going to replace the adjusters and let the rest go. Still not sure what changed, but hey, its working.

Just make sure you are getting oil at all eight rockers and not just a few.

Yep, that groove in the threaded adjuster appears to be a critical piece of the puzzle!

I'd also check why the furthest rocker in the photo is adjusted so much different than the others.
