a few more teasers from Bug-in...

DKP's Darrel Bomgaars made the first pass down the very slippery Irwindale racetrack after being dormant nearly 3 months.  Shocked
DKP's Dave Mason took over driving duties for Ron Fleming on a "exhibition pass".
DKK pulling out all the stops to outshine DKP's display  Smiley
Perhaps Dave Galassi can share the incredible journey this Split Window has been on...

Sarge has the first batch from Friday and Saturday added to the DKP archives, more to follow soon...

That is DKP Prospect, Andre's car (behind the car, with the cap on backwards), a good friend of Hector Bonilla's. It cannot be appreciated in pictures! It's one of those colors that's hard to describe with lot's of period pieces and best of all, he did a lot of the work himself! I took a couple more shots of it Saturday, should be on our site any day...

It was a truly EPIC weekend!

Some things happened that were just amazing!

I could have gone home at 10am and said that this was the best Bug-In I've been to since OCIR closed and it got better after that.

There are at least two stories about original Cal-Look cars and owners coming back together after decades apart and a part.

You're too kind Dustin.

There is no way DKK could be where it's at without DKP.

There is so much crossover between the clubs in friendships, attitudes and ideals.

I had to add another picture of this car from Bug in 37.  Probably my favorite of the day.  Great story attached to it too.

I like just about everything about the car but the color... just doesn't do it for me, but I've never been a big green fan, at least not candy or limey type greens. But hey, that's a pretty minor point of criticism, IMO! Grin

That was one of the best Bug-In events I've attended since the O.C.I.R. days. So much fun packed into one day. Still smiling. Thank you to everyone that made it possible and to the many people that stopped by with the kind words.

Dave Galassi... you're already a class act in my book. But when you pulled me aside early in the morning to fully explain the story behind that gorgeous green Split, I was holding back tears. Not sad ones, either. The only time I left our area was to go back and drool over that car. It's the epitome of what a Cal Look hot-rodded VW should be measured by, in my opinion. It reminds me of why I originally gravitated to these cars. Besides the fact that my family bought new ones in the sixties and I was raised in 'em.

Great day with friends and making new ones! STOKED. Hope Rich Kimball and the powers that be know how much fun was had. Everyone I talked to was in a great mood throughout the day. Looking forward to the magazine coverage, too. Thanks for posting the pictures, guys, for the first time... I forgot my Nikon at home. Was having too much of a good time to leave and go get it. Live and learn.

Driving Hot VWs for 44 Years Strong!

« Reply #24 on: May 01, 2012, 03:15:14 am »

DKK Fred....I agree about the BUG-IN.  What was a last minute shuffle for Rich Kimball turned out to be one of the best events to date.  Reminded me of the old days too. The layout was nice, the variety good and VW comaradarie was great too.  Lots of old friends to visit with and a great day overall.  The trip from Phoenix was worth it.

My own kudos follow everyone elses- THANKS Rick Kimball and crew for pulling one out of the air. Your mad scramble provided a fantastic day. I think Bug In's should say they have a new home, no matter what happens to Fontana.
I want to also Thank EVERYONE who lent their hand in bringing Russ Welch's split window back to life. Russ it was cool to see your split looking mean in green!

And not least, may I say that I have seldom met 2 nicer and more friendly guys than Paul and Mark Schely.
They don't know me from the next guy. When we got to talking to Paul about recollections over my having seen the Lighting Bug run at the Winternationals in 1972, and how looking at the car again makes me feel, he showed real interest, as if I had always been one of his friends.
I bought one of their tee shirt that were for sale, and as they signed it for me, Mark kept thanking me over and over for my purchase. You talk about Quality Guys!  Aren't we all fortunate that they are back and bringing VW history to life again!

And certainly, seeing Russell's recreation of the first Lighting Bug was damn cool too! My hat is off to you Russell for such a fine job.

Not since the Bug In's at OCIR have I enjoyed a day as much.
