I’ve just turned 40 and having a mid life crisis!  Shocked

So I thought this is the perfect time to start back on the NSU Prinz 4. It all started back in 2008 when us guys were discussing what types of non VW bodied race cars with flatfour engines had been made over the years and what other models would make good race cars.
 
A few weeks passed and I was visiting my friend Frank (WhiteTrash) on here. He had a Hillman Imp at his workshop and I made a comment referring to the discussion a few weeks before that it would be cool to put a flatfour engine in the Hillman to race. At this point Frank suggested the NSU Prinz as it was very similar to the Hillman, we both laughed at the idea and thought nothing of it until I received a text from Frank telling me that there was an NSU Prinz for sale on the Isle of Wight on Ebay, But It was missing a door and needed some welding. Now bearing in mind that the Isle of Wight is off the South Coast of England, it is also the most expensive crossing per distance….so we scrapped that idea.

A week later Frank sent me a link to the German Ebay with an NSU Prinz for sale, I don’t know why but in a moment of madness I put a bid in for €250 thinking that I would be out-bided. Unfortunately I won it as I was the only person to place a bid!
As it was all Frank’s fault,  Cheesy I told him that he had to come with me to collect it plus the fact that he is German would make the exchange easier.

Early, very early on Saturday morning 21st February we sailed from Dover to Dunkerque, travelling through France, Belgium, Holland and finally a to a little place deep in north Germany somewhere. It took so long to get there that we stayed overnight and came home on the Sunday.

Back in the UK: The idea was to store it until we had some spare time as we already had our own projects on the go.
I had to go to the workshop a few weeks later for something and to my surprise Frank had already started. He had stripped and started some welding on it. Things like the engine, gearbox etc.. Were sold to fund the project.

Fast forward 4 years to now and a wet weekend in June Roll Eyes I decided it was time to start on the car again. So I called Frank and ask if I could come over a pick it up. It still need a bit of welding doing to one of the sills. Which me and my friend Russ finished off, as the plan was to take it up to Jim Smith of ‘Cotswelds Race Cars’ ( www.cotsweld.co.uk ) to have a roll cage and ladder bar set up. When we got to Jim's we when over what was needed to be done to the car. I was keen to keep it stock height as I was wanting to do a Gasser looking car, but Jim talked me into running the car a low as he could get it. One for safety at high speed and two it will look far better. Smiley To achieve this he would have to narrow the front wishbone suspension by 6" allowing for the 15" ercos to fit under the arch, as the car came with 12" wheels. Moving on the the back of the car he going to shorten a pair of axle tube by 10" over all to take the 5in short race axle. Jim have also sectioned the arches so that the 15" wheels fits in and looks factory. Next Jim will move on the ladder bars, roll cage and frame to hold the gear box (Photos to follow) when finished.

The pictures below are a mock up of how the car will eventually sit. I will continue to update this thread with the progress and pictures as Jim continues the work.

As for the rest of the car the plan is to fit my 2109cc IDA motor out of my bay window to start with, followed by a small turbo motor when it’s dialed in. Colour, well I haven’t decided yet but I’m sure there will be Gold in it somewhere! Grin

Jim has decided that the original m8 studs were not going to be up to the job, so made new ones using m12 studs.

Today took my 2109cc motor apart for a fresh up before putting it in the car when ready to. Everything was OK apart from two of the lifter bores, in the mag case. So will be sending it off to have all eight sleeved.

Remembering this tiny cars this is going to be a challenge to get the engine in there.
Is there enough clearance to the rear apron?
